Jakarta.  Accepting social responsibility is an inextricable part of BMW Group’s corporate culture.  As a good corporate citizen, BMW Indonesia announced today its contribution of 30,000 US Dollars for the establishment of three Children Activity Centers for underprivileged children in Jakarta as part of its corporate social responsibility programs in Indonesia.

“In line with BMW Group’s understanding of sustainable social commitment, we will concentrate on helping children and young people in our effort to support the community where we are doing our business,” said Ramesh Divyanathan, President Director of BMW Indonesia during the signing of cooperation agreement with Indonesian Street Children Organization (ISCO) at Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

Guided by the intention to provide truly effective support to the young generation, BMW Indonesia has examined the situation and the most pressing needs in the community and has decided to provide education support to underprivileged children in Jakarta area.

The Children Activity Centers will be established in densely populated areas where most residents are trash pickers, casual laborers, secondhand wares sellers, beggars and street vendors. The locations are Cipinang Besar Utara, east of Jakarta, Pademangan, north of Jakarta, and Kampung Gege, west of Jakarta.

The centers will offer an array of after-school educational and creative classes to the children, aged from 6 to 18 years old. Selection for participation in the centers will be based on need and demonstrated academic interest.

“Only selected children from parents with a certain limit of income who show also their strong intent to gain a better education for their children can participate in this facility,” according to Mr. Josef Fuchs, the President of ISCO.

The centers will organize creativity classes that stimulate and motivate the children’s interest in learning.  The children also will receive vitamins, milk and nutritious meal during their time at the facilities. They also will be away from the dangers of crime and drugs of the streets.

The first Children Activity Center supported by BMW will open at Pademangan in April 2010, with the two other facilities to be opened in the following months.

BMW Indonesia, established in 2001, has been actively involved in CSR programs since 2003.  Among them are BMW involvement in the establishment of Kelas Super in Jakarta, providing mobile learning centers offering IT, science and health education to junior high school children; the Tsunami Education Park in Aceh and aid to Padang’s earthquake victims in 2009.
