Chicago. World Number One Tiger Woods became the inaugural winner of the
BMW Championship 2007 yesterday with a remarkable final-day round of
63, which swept him to a record 22 under par total, two strokes clear
of Australian Aaron Baddeley. Securing the title at the Cog Hill Golf
& Country Club in Chicago took Woods to the top of the FedEx-Cup
leaderboard and, with one tournament left in the playoff series, leaves
him favourite to win the $10-million prize. The BMW Championship 2007
victory was Woods' fourth at this tournament, which was known as the
Western Open before becoming the BMW Championship. Woods joins Willie
Anderson (1902, 1904, 1908, and 1909) and Billy Casper (1965, 1966, 1969
and 1973) as the only four-time winners. He is poised to challenge
Walter Hagen, the only player to have won the title five times (1916,
1921, 1926, 1927 and 1932). The victory also marked the 60th PGA TOUR
title Woods has won in his 12 years of professional golf. "I never
could have foreseen that," Woods said. "I've exceeded my
expectations and it's been a lot of fun." A total of 140,000 fans
thronged the Dubsdread course during the BMW Championship and were
treated to a superb display of golf from 65 of the world's best
players. On the final day, they were able to watch a masterclass from
Woods as he went blow for blow with Aaron Baddeley and Steve Stricker.
The turning point came with a birdie on the 13th, which took Woods into
sole possession of the lead, a position he never relinquished for the
remaining five holes. "We believe that the inaugural BMW
Championship has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience for players
and fans alike. Even though the week started out with some rainy
weather, the skies turned to blue in time for the weekend and we saw a
terrific bump in attendance on Saturday and Sunday. The competition has
been strong and fans have been able to see some of the world's best
golfers on one of the finest courses in the U.S. - Cog Hill. It has been
a pleasure working with our good friends at the PGA Tour and Western
Golf Association and we look forward to continued success with the BMW
Championship in the years to come.", said Tom Purves, Chairman and
CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. 6,000 visitors were entertained at the
innovative Earth Lounge showcasing the sustainability strategy of the
BMW Group and 167 took test drives in BMW Hydrogen 7 cars. BMW
Championship Merchandise was completely sold out by Friday. Woods, who
missed only two fairways on the weekend rounds and carded 67, 67, 65
and 63 for the championship, added $1.26 million to his season's
winnings, taking his total to over $9 million for 2007. Baddeley took
home $756,000 for his 2nd place finish, while Steve Stricker won
$476,000 for finishing 3rd. Afterwards, Woods commented: "This
tournament has been very special to me. I got an exemption to play here
as an amateur. I ended up making my first cut ever on the PGA TOUR
here. I have somehow always played well here and I've enjoyed the
atmosphere." The BMW Championship was the third and penultimate
tournament in the FedEx-Cup playoff series making its debut this year.
Of the 144 players who qualified for the playoffs, the field was cut to
70 for the BMW Championship and is further cut to 30 for the decider.
Heading into the finale at the PGA TOUR Championship in Atlanta,
Georgia, Woods tops the points, followed by Stricker, Phil Mickelson,
K.J. Choi and Rory Sabbatini. Statistically, only those five are in
with a chance of winning the playoff prize. For further inquiries,
