BMW Motorsport Director and former grand prix Champion Gerhard Berger
celebrated two victories during a short visit to Dubai last week - BMW's
first Formula 1 win since returning to the sport last year and the
Dubai-based Victory Team's BMW-powered triumph in the UAE Offshore
Powerboat Championship. Berger, who flew in to Dubai from Italy on
April 18th after witnessing the victory of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team in
the Imola Grand Prix, made a quick visit to the Dubai International
Marine Club (DIMC) to experience for himself the thrill of another
BMW-powered racing machine - the Victory Team Class II powerboats.
Hosted by Victory Team General Manager Gianfranco Venturelli, Berger met
with Victory Team star Saeed Al Tayer and dressed in racing overalls to
join him in the BMW-powered Class Two Victory Team powerboat - the same
boat that won the recent UAE Class Two Offshore Powerboat Championship.
Berger, who has ten Formula One Grand Prix titles to his credit, was in
charge of steering the powerboat, and he was quick to praise both his
throttle-man and the boat, which is powered by two BMW V8 engines
identical to the ones used in the BMW X5 and 740iL models. Thoroughly
enjoying the ride, Berger said: "The seas were very rough and we
had a few big jumps but it was a great experience. It's very important
to me that I have belief in my partner when I do something like this
and in Saeed I had a serious and skillful pilot." Al Tayer, who
was equally impressed with Berger's skills, said: "Gerhard was
very good out there in what were tough conditions. He would be a great
driver for the Victory Team but I don't know if we could afford someone
like him," joked the Dubai star. Gerhard Berger is currently
playing a key role on developing the Williams BMW Team and is confident
that with the engine in this year's car and Ralf Schumacher's
performance so far they would be in a winning position several times
this season. - Ends -
