The BMW Z8 and X5 have been voted the best in their categories in
"Middle East Car of the Year" (MECOY) 2001 awards. In an
independently audited annual survey of almost 60,000 auto-enthusiasts
from across the region, the BMW Z8 and BMW X5 polled the votes for best
roadster/convertible and large luxury 4x4 respectively. Robert
Bailey-McEwan, Managing Director of BMW Group Middle East, said,
"Winning the MECOY award is a true acclamation because this is
proof of BMW's wide popularity among customers and readers across the
Middle East. We are delighted with this success." The BMW X5
introduces a totally new concept in design engineering, the first 4x4
built without a chassis. "This award is an acknowledgement to this
giant leap forward. Our aim is to continuously provide cars with
innovative technologies that deliver sheer driving pleasure,"
added Bailey-McEwan. The BMW Z8 sports car is a modern interpretation
of the legendary BMW 507: breathtakingly beautiful, classic in its
proportions, offering the highest standards of technology. This open
two-seater is a dream car far beyond the constraints of fashion and
fleeting trends; a truly exceptional automobile for the aficionado.
The outstanding popularity of BMW is also confirmed in other countries.
Just recently, both BMW Z8 and X5 won "Best Cars of the
World" 2001 readers' contest conducted by Auto Motor und Sport,
one of Europe's leading motor magazines. Another significant title for
the BMW Z8 was Robb Reports' Car of the Year 2001 award, announced at
the Los Angeles Motor Show. This leading US magazine awards the prize
to manufacturers that specialize in the production of exclusive,
high-performance, thoroughbred automobiles in the plus-$ 40,000
category. - Ends -
