Never before in the history of the "Engine of the Year Award" has an engine been voted power unit of the year twice in succession. However, BMW's V10 high performance engine, which powers both the BMW M5 and M6, has rewritten the record books. The 373 kW, 8 200 rpm power unit was voted "International Engine of the Year 2006" in Stuttgart, for the second time in succession by around 60 renowned trade journalists from all over the world. in the history of the "Engine of the Year Award" has an
engine been voted power unit of the year twice in succession. However,
BMW's V10 high performance engine, which powers both the BMW M5 and M6,
has rewritten the record books. The 373 kW, 8 200 rpm power unit was
voted "International Engine of the Year 2006" in Stuttgart,
for the second time in succession by around 60 renowned trade
journalists from all over the world. Moreover, it also received the
coveted award as "Best Performance Engine 2006", and ensured a
clean-sweep for BMW's M engineers by taking first place in the class
exceeding 4 litres cubic capacity. In addition, BMW M engineers were
also able to win laurels with another record-breaking power unit. The
3.2-litre straight-six engine sported by the BMW M3 with 252 kW, and
now also featured in the BMW Z4 M Roadster and Z4 M Coupe, again caused
a sensation. It was winner in the class from three to four litres cubic
capacity for the sixth time in a row. No engine has managed to come
close to this astounding achievement. But the list of engine successes
didn't end with petrol power. The 200kW three-litre twin turbo diesel
engine, which powers the unavailable-in-SA BMW 535d took first place in
the class from 2.5 to 3.0 litres cubic capacity, rendering it the only
winning diesel engine in the competition. Second place was clinched by
the new BMW 3-litre six-cylinder petrol engine used in almost all
series and boasting either 190 or 195 kW, depending on the model.
These five awards ensure that BMW has extended its lead as the most
successful brand to participate in the Engine of the Year competition.
The Munich engine builder has now seized 31 trophies in a period of
only eight years.
