Internationally renowned electronic/dance duo make the perfect fit for the future-retro MINI Cooper S Paceman.
The partnership, which strikes a chord with MINIs long-standing dedication to individuality, freedom and exclusivity has seen the imitable Dominic Peters and David Poole climb into the driver’s seat of a MINI Cooper S Paceman – joining fellow brand ambassadors such as William Rupert Mellor, Goodluck and DJ Euphonik.
This story, like many others, begins in the hallowed halls of tertiary education. After completing their Masters degrees in classical music at the University of Cape Town, Dom and Dave were at a loss for what to do next. Although many of their peers had aspirations to join major orchestras the duo was hungry for something out of the ordinary.
Taking the road less travelled they began experimenting by fusing live music and house infused electronic beats. Locking themselves in a bedroom with a saxophone, double bass and a handful of synths, Dom and Dave released their first album under the moniker ‘Goldfish’ in 2006 – ‘Caught in the Loop’.
Success arrived shortly thereafter, taking the group completely by surprise. In only a few years Goldfish progressed from playing at small clubs on the Cape Town beach front to headlining Ibiza’s most popular attraction – Pacha.
Today Dave and Dom divide their time between tranquil surfing sessions and a frantic international touring schedule.
Learning the rules and then breaking them has been central to their success, believes Dave.
“We both have degrees in music from UCT but it's like that saying: Learn the book verbatim and then forget everything. Great art is always linked to being able to access people's emotions and that is what we try to do with our music” says Dave.
“MINI is a future-retro car and we are a future-retro band. One foot in the tradition and style of the past and the other on the cutting edge. It's fun, it's sunny, there's humour, it's for people looking for a bit more self-expression in life. It couldn't be a better fit,” added Dom.
It is this dedication to doing things a little differently that makes Goldfish the perfect inclusion to the friends of MINI circle, believes Kabelo Rabotho – General Manager of MINI South Africa.
“We have been lucky enough to drive all the MINI models at some point. The MINI Clubman was our first experience with the brand and they are super fun. Zippy with just a bit more space than a MINI Hatch but losing none of the go-kart performance. Then the MINI Countryman was like a revelation when we drove it. It's like the perfect car. It still has the MINI personality but with four doors, space for the surfboards and just the perfect lifestyle car. We are over the moon to now be driving the new MINI Paceman. A Sports Activity Coupè with all the space you need, it’s the perfect guys car,” added Dom.
“The duo could have done what everyone expected and become classical musicians but instead they chose to chase their dreams and do something totally unexpected. This is what resonates with the MINI brand – a willingness to do something astonishing. We look forward to a fruitful and exciting partnership in the years to come,” concluded Rabotho.
Goldfish’s most recent album, Three Second Memory, was released to the public in October 2013.
