Los Angeles Celebrates the Millionth Mile of the Ultimate Drive for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Mon Oct 28 12:00:00 CET 99 Press Release
Festive Closing Ceremonies Accompanied By Announcement of BMW's Groundbreaking Internet Auction
Sixteen gleaming silver-checkered BMWs drove into the Petersen Automotive
Museum in Los Angeles today, bringing to a close the third Ultimate Drive for
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation - a unique grassroots fundraising
effort in which more than 100,000 people across the country have participated,
raising $3 million for breast cancer research, education, screening and
treatment. Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp., Tom Purves joined Linda
Kay Peterson, Chairman of the Board of the Komen Foundation at the ceremony, at
which Purves also made a surprise announcement of a groundbreaking Internet
auction of the first American-made X5 - the company's brand new line of Sports
Activity Vehicles - 100% of proceeds from which will go to the Komen
Foundation.
Beginning in New York on May 11, and ending five months later on the opposite
coast, the Ultimate Drive -- consisting of sixteen specially-badged BMWs --
criss-crossed America, landing in 200 cities. In each city, BMW and the Komen
Foundation hosted an all-day fundraising event in which for each mile that a
BMW was test-driven, $1 was donated to the Komen Foundation. In addition, a
special presentation was conducted in each community to recognize a local
"Hero" for his or her outstanding work in the community to help eradicate
breast cancer.
A photograph of each "Hero," along with their signature, was affixed to a
special BMW "signature car" which then became a moving symbol of the program's
goals. "We are truly moved by the thousands of people across America who have
shifted into gear to help us eradicate breast cancer," said Tom Purves,
Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. "The response has been immediate
and gratifying: In just three years, we have raised over $3 million dollars.
And we're already focusing on next year's campaign, in which we hope to raise
at least an additional million dollars."
"BMW has proven that there is unlimited mileage in the Ultimate Drive
campaign," said Linda Kay Peterson of the Komen Foundation. "We're thrilled
to be working with them -- and with these extraordinarily supportive
communities -- on what is rapidly proving to be one of the most successful and
visible campaigns to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of
early detection. With BMW's help, we're moving closer towards a cure."
The closing ceremonies were given a dose of additional excitement by Purves'
announcement of a groundbreaking Internet auction of the first X5, BMW's
brand-new line of luxury Sports Activity Vehicles (SAVs). The highest bidder
will not only receive the first American-made X5, but will also win a free trip
to the recently-opened state-of-the-art BMW Performance Center in South
Carolina. Designed by one of the designers of Epcot center, the BMW driving
circuits incorporate interactive backdrops, so that one minute the driver is
barreling past Incan ruins, the next through dramatic rain forest waterfalls.
All proceeds from the sale of the car will go to the Komen Foundation.
"I do believe we are the first car maker to roll a vehicle off the line,
on-line," Purves noted.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy
Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast
cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation is a national organization with a
network of volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening
disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
The Komen Foundation is one of the nation's largest private funders of breast
cancer research and community programs. In addition to funding research, the
Foundation funds innovative breast cancer education, screening and treatment
projects for the medically under-served. Hundreds of thousands of women and men
receive the life-saving message of early detection through Komen's outreach
efforts.
