Expert Dr. Natalie Mayet, BMW Group South Africa, speaks at the 11th Munich
AIDS-Conference 2006
Munich. The BMW Group continues with its successful programme in the fight
against the pandemic. Within the context of these activities Dr. Natalie Mayet,
General Manager for Health and Occupational Medicine of the BMW Group South
Africa, is a participant of the Munich AIDS Conference (from the 3rd till the
5th of February 2006). On the 4th of February 2006 the doctor will be speaking
on the subject "HIV/AIDS in South Africa - Inventive Approaches by Companies".
Before a panel of experts she will be illustrating the possibilities of "Public
Private Partnerships in South Africa" in the fight against AIDS. At the
following press conference, Dr. Mayet will be making a statement about the
results of the Prevention Programme of the BMW Group in South Africa.
This campaign of information and treatment on the part of the BMW Group was
initiated in the year 2000 and has developed into an effective strategy against
the pandemic. 96 per cent of the South African employees have undergone a
voluntary HIV-Test. The HIV positive rate is six per cent and this rate of
infection lies well below the average for the country.
"The company has partnered with employees and unions in the fight against
HIV/AIDS. Each individual has taken on the responsibility to be an HIV
prevention advocate, is setting a good example and motivates his colleagues."
With these words Dr. Mayet characterises the Workplace Programme at the
BMW-plant in Rosslyn. "In South Africa we have developed a HIV/AIDS-Programme
that attempts to offer both individual and long-term solutions. But no single
company can cope with the consequences on its own. We need a broad coalition
between the Government , the Departments of Health, NGOs and the community. "
Thus the appeal from Dr. Natalie Mayet.
She presented the Soshanguve Health & Wellness Center, in which the BMW Group
is involved as one of the partners, as a successful example for the future
model Public Private Partnership. Since its opening last year the centre,
located in the vicinity of Rosslyn, offers a health service complete with
counselling for the entire community.
Dr. Natalie Mayet last informed the European public about the urgency of
AIDS-Prevention at the 5th Annual Congress of the Council for Sustainable
Development in 2005 in Berlin. The commitment of the BMW Group in South Africa
is an integral part of the international activities against HIV/AIDS. In order
to consolidate its own actions within the global economic community, the BMW
Group joined the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC) in 2005. The
expansion of the Workplace Programme to other locations of the BMW Group is
underway.
