BMW Welt receives award in the category "Best New Public Building 2009".
BMW Welt receives award in the category "Best New Public Building 2009".
London. BMW Welt constructed by Coop Himmelb(l)au was presented in London with
the international Wallpaper Design Award 2009. The BMW brand's interactive
experience and delivery centre also won the award in the category "Best New
Public Building". Rudolf Wiedemann, director of the BMW interactive experience
and delivery centre is proud of the accolade: "It is further proof of the
tremendous international response to the outstanding architectural design of
BMW Welt. In this building the brand's fascination can be truly experienced at
first hand."
The global design and lifestyle magazine "Wallpaper" is one of the most
influential international journals in the architecture and design sector and
presents the coveted Wallpaper Design Award each year. Architects, designers
and creative professionals alike regard the magazine as a trade trendsetter.
The jury explained why the award was presented to BMW Welt as follows: "The new
and dynamic Coop Himmelb(l)au creation for BMW in Munich is not only a
groundbreaking automobile delivery centre but also a place for exhibiting,
communicating and public gathering. The dynamic, transparent glass and steel
structure has a sweeping sculptural roof forming into a twisted double cone, as
well as an open plan interior featuring a monumental staircase, bridges and
balconies."
The Wallpaper Design Award is just one of the many accolades received by Coop
Himme(l)blau for the BMW Welt building. These include the RIBA (Royal Institute
of British Architects) European Award, a prize at the World Architecture
Festival Award 2008 in the category "Production", the German Steel Construction
Prize 2008 as well as the Detail Prize 2009 in the category "Innovation Steel".
Moreover, BMW Welt was certified in December 2008 as the first interactive
experience and delivery centre designed according to ISO 9001 and VDA 6.2. The
prizes underline the outstanding architectural significance of BMW Welt and are
evidence of the external effect achieved by the BMW interactive experience and
delivery centre internationally.
Alongside the legendary "Four Cylinder" by Karl Schwanzer and the recently
opened BMW Museum, BMW Welt is one of the city of Munich's architectural
landmarks that is a lasting representation of the BMW Group's technological and
innovative competence.
