Corporate Citizenship - Commitment to Society.
Foreword.

"We are a part of the whole".

As the process of globalisation advances, the importance of those companies
operating in the international arena grows accordingly. This is a development,
which is viewed with some scepticism by large sections of society. However, it
is a fact that mutual trust between society on the one hand and business on the
other forms a basis on which to build political, social and economic stability.
It is therefore important for companies to realise that they are a part of
society and as such they must act with due responsibility for that society.

The BMW Group takes its responsibilities seriously, not only with regard to its
staff and shareholders, customers and business partners, but also in terms of
its social responsibility to society in general.

The wide-ranging relationships between business and society document the
dependencies and represent the only opportunity for joint development. The BMW
Group realised early that this situation represents both chances and
responsibilities.

More than 20 years ago the company decided to take both aspects into account in
their activities, which led to forging successive relationships with a variety
of organisations in society, in its role as a corporate citizen. This was
initially conducted in the immediate neighbourhood of the head office in
Munich, but later expanded onto an international level.

Under the banner of "We Assume Responsibility" the BMW Group is involved in
programs, which seek to:

- increase road safety,
- promote understanding between peoples and oppose violence,
- promote highly gifted children and young people
- promote sustainable education (e.g. CleanEnergy in schools) and
- create understanding and mutual, trusting acceptance in the communities in
which it maintains its operations.

The company selected these main areas in its commitment to society as they are
following our company culture and our company goals most sustainable. They
apply to all BMW Group locations, because it is necessary for a company culture
to be lived internally before it can exercise an external influence.

There are many location factors, which are characterised by the local company,
the respective political and cultural awareness, and also the economic
situation. Therefore the commitment of the BMW Group also takes special local
traits into account. The local activities, for example, in US Spartanburg have
a different basis to those in German Dingolfing, or even South Africa.

An example of a South African project is the SEED (Schools Environmental
Education Development) Project. This involves teaching children to sow and
plant their own vegetables and subsequently to harvest them. This serves to
increase their environmental awareness but at the same time it also helps to
fight the problem of hunger in the townships and squatter camps. It is only one
example of the country-specific work being conducted in South Africa.

The general approach of the BMW Group worldwide is to help people to help
themselves and to integrate its own initiatives in the company's social
programs. It is not so much financial support- this would in itself only
provide a short-term solution to the problems - but rather our personal
commitment providing advice and active intervention using all the potential of
the Group.

The social commitment of the BMW Group is a long term one and its aim is to set
up a permanent basis on which to build a better future for people, both inside
and outside the communities in which the company is at home.

Human Resources and Industrial Relations Director

Corporate Citizenship - Commitment to Society.
Introduction.

"We Assume Responsibility" - worldwide.

The aim of the socio-political work conducted by the BMW Group is to take on
social responsibility for the preservation and development of society at the
company locations and beyond. We regard children and young adults as
particularly important since they will be in charge of shaping the society of
the future. What they learn and experience and the values they absorb today
will have an effect on future society. This is why the company is placing
considerable focus on these age groups and their environment.

The BMW Group does not consider itself a sponsor in this regard but as a
commissioning body and initiator of its own projects. These projects are based
on the company culture and the focus topics deduced from this. In this way the
company not only is proving its technological and economic competence but also
its social involvement and is attempting to develop it in a continuous manner.
The projects presented here document activities, which are running now and have
been conducted for a number for years, to help children and young people as
well as their educational advisors.

The presentation of the company's main fields of project activity, as shown on
the following pages, give an insight into the commitment to society of the BMW
Group in its role as a corporate citizen. Many of the programs are implemented
at the locations of the BMW Group company branches, in the form of pilot
projects. Munich - being the location of the firm's headquarters - is playing a
directing role. Beyond this, the involvement of the company is not subject to
regional restriction. The projects have been conceived in such a way as to
enable them to be transferred to societies both at home and abroad. The media
packages, which explain the projects can be used as teaching materials and are
available free of charge from anywhere in the world.

In all the projects discussed the BMW Group cooperates with competent partners.
The projects have been created in close cooperation with both academic experts
and practical specialists in the field, working in education and advising young
people.
