Woodcliff Lake, NJ - March 9, 2004 ... Team USA rider Brian Parriott emerged
victorious on his home soil in the much-anticipated return of the BMW Motorrad
BoxerCup on Saturday, March 6th at Daytona International Speedway. The season
opener of the 2004 BMW Motorrad BoxerCup series was held under sunny Florida
skies just prior to the 63rd running of the Daytona 200 AMA Superbike matchup.
Thomas Hinterreiter, of the BMW Motorrad Austria Team, finished second after
earning the coveted pole position in the qualifying round by besting his
fastest Daytona racing lap of last year by almost a second. Other starting
positions in the first row went to Sebastien Legrelle of Belgium; Richard
"Mini" Cooper of Great Britain; and Gwen Giabbani of Team Reseau France. Lined
up behind the first row were Stephane Mertens of Belgium; Brian Parriott; Oriol
Fernandez of Spain; and German Markus Barth of the BMW Retail Subsidiaries
Boxer Racing Team, who finished the race in third place.
As the 37 racers emerged from the pit lane to the roar of an enthusiastic
crowd, the cylinder heads of their bikes were nearly touching as their BMW R
1100 S flat-twin boxer machines simultaneously weaved their way around the
first bend into the infield of the East Horseshoe hairpin. Fiercely competing
for every centimeter of the track, the field turned into the steep West Banking
bend. From there, it was full throttle as each racer attempted to use the
slipstream to edge up on the man ahead, then move out of the slipstream and
shoot down from the steep bend into the straight.
In the first lap, Endurance World Champion Mertens had a wafer-thin lead under
merciless pursuit by Parriott, Barth and Hinterreiter. One lap later, Mertens
was ousted from his leading position by Legrelle. In the subsequent laps,
Barth, Fernandez and pole-sitter Hinterreiter struggled with grim determination
to hold on to the lead, but were edged out of the slipstream again and again.
Hinterreiter eventually made his move with his fastest lap time of 2:04:607.
In the tenth lap it was Parriott's moment to shine. The American, who finished
second on the high banks of Daytona Speedway last year, had planned to pull
away from the leading group in the second half of the race. However, six laps
before the finish there was still no sign of that strategy.
"I just wanted to cruise along with the others for a bit," he later commented
with a wink. After several maneuvers that provoked roars from the crowd,
Parriott finally managed to move forward from fifth position. On the
International Horseshoe he finally passed his rivals in the infield and held on
to his lead.
Those left behind had to contend with poor grip on the treacherous color
markings, enabling Parriott to put a number of lengths between himself and the
rest of the pack for the first time. With a comfortable lead of 2.7 seconds,
he crossed the finish line grinning.
After his second-place finish last year in a side-by-side photo finish with
Italian racer Roberto Panichi, Parriot was overjoyed to have finally clinched
his first BoxerCup victory.
"Once again, this race demonstrated that at least six of the top riders are in
a position to win the cup and the BMW M3. I hope to make sure it's me this
year."
In a heart-stopping finish, five riders - Fernandez, Hinterreiter, Barth,
Legrelle and Mertens - shot through the light barrier with a single second.
Fernandez, who finished the race second, was disqualified from scoring after
the technical inspection revealed that his bike did not conform to
regulations. Hinterreiter then moved up to second and Barth subsequently
claimed third.
Hosted by the American Motorcycle Association Pro Racing, the Daytona running
of the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup race concluded a week-long series of special
