REMARKS BY TOM PURVES AT THE BMW PRESS CONFERENCE, NEW YORK AUTO SHOW, MARCH 19, 2008.
Wed Mar 19 16:30:00 CET 2008 Press Release
Remarks by Mr. Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp., BMW Press Conference at the New York Auto Show, Wednesday, March 19, 2008.
- Check against delivery -
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good Morning and welcome to the New York International Auto Show.
Today I have three key messages for you.
1. BMW's market success here in the US and in other parts of the world is
driven by new products. We have never had a more exciting year in terms of
product news. Most of these new vehicles are on the stand today.
2. By offering the right products to our ever expanding customer base, we want
to maintain our top position as the world's leading manufacturer of premium
vehicles.
3. We are committed to further expanding our business activity here in the US.
The US has grown to be our most important market - even ahead of Germany. Just
last week, we officially announced that we are expanding our plant in
Spartanburg, SC, by 50 percent by 2012.
1. New model line up in 2008.
Let's take a closer look at our new model lineup for 2008. This year we will
introduce no less than eleven completely new BMW models - most of them are here
at the show. This is an excellent example of the further diversification of our
product portfolio.
* Next week, the BMW 1 Series Coupe and 1 Series Convertible will go on sale.
The 1 Series is our modern interpretation of the ever famous 2002 that created
our reputation as the "ultimate driving machine". We will be offering both the
coupe and convertible as a 128i and a135i.
The BMW 1 Series may be the least expensive models within the BMW brand but
they are, in no way, "entry vehicles". Rather they are the purest expression
of BMW's long time tag line.
* Next month, the first "Sports Activity Coupe", the BMW X6 will go on sale in
the United States. This vehicle is built at our plant in Spartanburg, South
Carolina.
Available with two different engine displacements, the BMW X6 is the most
sporty, dynamic member of the BMW X family yet to date.
The vehicle not only features xDrive, our intelligent all-wheel drive
technology, but also the world innovation "Dynamic Performance Control". This
new function allows distributing drive power continuously along the rear axle
between the left and right wheels - ensuring even better handling and greater
driving stability.
Another technical highlight is the all new V8 engine. For the first time we
have implemented second-generation High Precision Injection and Twin Turbo
Technology in a V8 engine. The result is impressive: 400 HP and 450lb-ft of
torque at 1,800-4,500rpm. The BMW X6 not only delivers power but also
impressively low fuel consumption and emission figures which are best in its
segment.
The enormously positive feedback we have received so far is proof to us that
this new product sets the pace for others to follow.
* Finally with the all new, 4th generation BMW M3 we are taking the "ultimate
driving machine" to the next level. And today I am proud to present the latest
addition to our M3 line up for the first time in North America - the BMW M3
Convertible to my right.
UNVEILING M3 CONVERTIBLE
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Convertible will go on sale later this spring and will retail for $65,725
(including destination and handling charges). The Sedan and Coupe are available
starting next week.
Just like its siblings - the M3 Coupe and Sedan - the Convertible differs
greatly in looks - as well as technical features - from the latest 3 Series
standard version upon which it was developed.
Let's start with the "heart" of every BMW - the engine: The new eight cylinder
engine not only provides 24 percent more power output but is also lighter and
more efficient compared to its predecessor. The new light-alloy engine produces
414 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. With 8,400 rpm this is the highest rpm machine
BMW has ever built.
Another technical highlight is the transmission: In addition to a traditional
6-speed manual we are offering the M3 with an all new M Double-Clutch
transmission with Drivelogic specially designed for high-rpm engines.
The transmission shifts gears without the slightest interruption in the flow of
power. As a result, it is able to extract the most performance possible from
the car. The new twin-disc clutch will make its debut as an option initially on
the M3 Coupe. The M3 Convertible and Sedan will follow soon afterwards.
And even though the M3 is inspired by the best race cars, what is really
significant about it is the balance it achieves between really sporty race car
performance on the one hand and something you can use to take your kids to
school on the other. BMW has always been good at that. And that's what
differentiates us from the rest.
2. Maintain top position as world's leading premium manufacturer.
With this great product line up launching this year, I am confident that we
will once again maintain our top position as the world's leading manufacturer
of premium vehicles.
We have once again taken on a great deal and we are aiming to set new world
wide sales records in 2008 - not just for the BMW brand but also for MINI and
Rolls Royce. And by 2012 we are planning to increase our worldwide automobile
retail sales to more than 1.8 million, up 300,000 vehicles from the 1.5 million
in 2007.
We are also confident that this growth will be profitable even though we are
dealing with a continuously strong EURO and expensive raw materials. 2007
profits were right on target and we are planning to raise the dividend for our
shareholders significantly.
3. Strategic importance of the US
As part of BMW Group's future planning, the US will continue to be of strategic
importance for the company.
* Almost one out of four vehicles that BMW Group produces is sold in the US -
and we are confident to grow our US volume to 400,000 units in the medium term.
* We also identified the need to build more vehicles in our plant in
Spartanburg, South Carolina. Just last week we officially announced that we
will increase the capacity by 50 percent to 240,000 by 2012.
An additional $750 million will be invested for the expansion. 500 additional
employees will be hired.
This investment is the largest ever announced by BMW in the US, increasing
overall investments of the BMW Group in South Carolina to $4.2 billion since we
started production in the US in 1992.
After the expansion, the Spartanburg plant will be BMW's world plant for all X5
and X6 vehicles. The next generation X3 will also be built in Spartanburg.
* We are fully aware that the future of BMW is also about understanding the
society we live in - it is about identifying future customer needs and demands.
We have a young group of customers - the youngest luxury performance customers
- who are especially demanding. We know that they will not be willing to buy
performance cars unless they also offer improvements in fuel economy.
Therefore, we will also remain committed to high levels of investment in new
technologies particularly suited to the US, such as the BMW Advanced Diesel
technology (arriving fall 2008) and the BMW ActiveHybrid (arriving in 2009 as
X6 ActiveHybrid).
By using these new technologies, BMW is well underway in reducing its carbon
footprint. We have already won numerous awards for our unique company wide
approach "EfficientDynamics" and have been honored for being a green car
company. In fact, one of our European Advanced Diesels is one of the finalists
for the "2008 World Green Car of the Year Award", which will be presented at
the Auto Show tomorrow.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
In closing, I hope you all agree that you can expect a lot from BMW except for
one thing - a boring product.
* We are and we will stay "the ultimate driving machine" and the world's
leading manufacturer of premium vehicles.
* I am confident about this because we have a great product line up and I know
that our product offensive will continue to bring new and exciting models in
the years to come.
At this point you might wonder what exactly we are hiding under the cover...
Among those vehicles that we have acknowledged for the future is a 4-door
genuine Grand Turismo.
Though I can't tell you more about this project in detail just yet, what I can
do is share our vision of a BMW Grand Turismo - the BMW Concept CS.
The Concept CS embodies the core values of the BMW brand. It stands for
superior dynamics and elegance combined with the thrill of a high-performance
sports car.
For us, this concept is a trendsetting vehicle leading into a new category of
values and design elements characteristic of the BMW brand.
Ladies and Gentlemen, without further ado - for the first time in the US - The
BMW Concept CS.
UNVEILING CONCEPT CS
Thanks for your interest this morning. Enjoy your day at the NY Auto Show.
