Presentation at the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg.
Munich, Germany. August 20, 2001. The BMW Group is intensifying its
international dialogue with leading stakeholders on the future of sustainable
mobility and is setting the pace for the practical implementation of
sustainability measures.
With a comprehensive presentation and a number of events related to the theme
"Sustainability. It can be done." the BMW Group is playing an active role at
the United Nations World Summit on Sustainability in Johannesburg from 26
August to 04 September 2002.
The venue for all BMW Group events is Sandton Square, located directly in front
of the conference center, where the 24-meter BMW Group Earth Lounge will be set
up. The BMW Group is hosting South African President Thabo
M (RC1) beki and United Nations Environmental Project Executive Director
Professor Klaus Töpfer along with several other high-ranking summit
participants from the political, scientific, and industrial communities.
According to Dr. Norbert Reithofer, member of the BMW AG Board of Management,
"The BMW Group is taking part in Johannesburg because we firmly believe that
sustainability is more than just a vision of a distant future. Sustainability
is the core of our corporate strategy and the key to our continued success as a
manufacturer of premium automobiles". Dr. Reithofer also emphasized the
importance of playing an active role in the creation of networks representing
industry, government, and community interests to achieve the objectives of
sustainable development. With this in mind, the BMW Group is taking advantage
of the opportunities at the summit in Johannesburg to introduce its
sustainability strategy and discuss it with stakeholders. The company will also
present a number of examples demonstrating the BMW Group commitment to
sustainability.
Dr. Reithofer commented on the role of the BMW Group as a responsible member of
society: "Our active commitment to corporate citizenship is one of the primary
components of the BMW sustainability policy." Key elements of the BMW strategy
include an active social commitment at its production sites worldwide, high
social standards for all employees, and environment-friendly manufacturing
processes in keeping with the Clean Production theme. BMW's CleanEnergy
strategy represents an innovative vision of a sustainability model based on
hydrogen as the fuel of the future. Along these lines, the company launched the
BMW CleanEnergy World Tour in 2001 to promote the build up of a hydrogen
infrastructure. The BMW Group is also committed to the development of
intelligent, environmentally compatible traffic management in metropolitan
areas.
The BMW Group sustainability strategy is clearly recognized by the financial
community: The Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes lists the BMW Group as a
leader in the automotive industry. Aside from BMW, only one other European car
manufacturer meets the stringent Corporate Social Responsibility criteria
specified by London financial analysts for listing on the FTSE4Good Ethics
Index initiated in July 2001.
Participation in the World Summit in Johannesburg characterizes the
BMW Group's long-standing corporate presence in South Africa.
The company's commitment to progress in South Africa goes back nearly
30 years. Today, the BMW Group employs around 3,000 workers.
In recognition of the high quality standards achieved by the company's Rosslyn
Plant, near Pretoria, the U. S. based consumer research organization
J.D. Power and Associates awarded BMW South Africa the Gold Plant
Quality Award for 2002.
