WOODCLIFF LAKE NJ, MARCH 16, 1999... Thomas Purves, a 14- year veteran of the
BMW Group, has been named Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp.,
overseeing the sales, marketing and distribution activities for BMW and Land
Rover in North, Central and South America. He will assume his new duties on
May 1. He succeeds Dr. Henrich Heitmann, who was recently named to the BMW AG
board of management, responsible for worldwide sales and marketing.
In making the announcement, Dr. Heitmann said "BMW remains a strong,
independent company and our direction for the future is clear - careful
management of a strong brand. While the BMW brand is among the strongest
anywhere, we will not take that for granted and will continue to strengthen
it. Our strength lies in our independence and we will continue to manage that
in support of all our brands."
Purves, 50, has been the Rover board member for Sales and Marketing since June
of 1996. He joined the BMW Group in 1985 as Sales Director for BMW Ltd. in
Great Britain, with responsibility for all aspects of sales, distribution,
parts, service, dealer development and manpower development. In June of 1990,
he was appointed Managing Director of BMW Great Britain Ltd. Before joining
BMW, he held several sales management positions with Rolls Royce.
BMW entered the North American market in 1975. Since then, the company has
grown to include marketing, sales and financial service organizations in the
United States and Canada; a South Carolina manufacturing operation; a design
firm in California; a technology office in Silicon Valley; and various other
BMW operations throughout the U.S. and Canada. BMW is represented in North
America through a network of more than 375 automobile and 190 motorcycle
retailers in the United States and Canada. BMW (US) Holding Corp., the group's
North American headquarters, is located in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.
