Tue Nov 05 12:00:00 CET 99 Press Release
The BMW K 1200 LT and R 1100 S motorcycles have both received the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.
The BMW K 1200 LT and R 1100 S motorcycles have both received the Good Design
Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. The
institution has been recognizing industrial and graphic design excellence in
this annual competition and exhibition since the 1950's. The BMW R 1100 S was
recognized for its use of advanced and innovative design in order to achieve a
high performance threshold, while remaining aesthetically distinct. The BMW K
1200 LT was lauded as a design that brought features previously unavailable
into a segment, while once again offering a compelling visual presentation.
In this year alone, BMW motorcycles have received four awards from the
industrial design community. The R 1200 C captured an Industrial Design
Society of America 'Gold Award', its highest honor, in the transportation
category. The R 1100 S was previously lauded by ID Magazine for design
excellence, while the K 1200 LT was named to Robb Report's 'Best of the Best'
for 1999. In addition to this, BMW motorcycles have chalked up a host of
awards from motorcycle enthusiast publications. The K 1200 LT was named
Motorcycle of the Year by two of the top enthusiast publications, and
recognized as the top touring motorcycle by another.
According to the museum, Good Design is the world's oldest and most prestigious
awards program that bestows international recognition to designers and
manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product thinking. It recognizes
originality in design, and concepts that stretch the envelope beyond what is
considered standard product and consumer design. Over 2000 submissions were
received from more than 40 countries with just one hundred examples chosen as
winners.
The Good Design Show will be on display at Chicago Athenaeum's Main Museum, 6
North Michigan Ave. in Chicago, from November 4, 1999 through March 31, 2000.
K 1200 LT
In creating the K 1200 LT, BMW Motorcycle's Design Team, headed by David Robb,
worked with engineers to endow the motorcycle with the very latest in
technology as standard equipment, so that both rider and passenger could enjoy
touring in a way that redefines BMW's strong tradition of long distance
dependability. The K 1200 LT is characterized by an elegant appearance,
superior power, class-leading safety features, dynamic and agile riding
characteristics, supreme comfort, ample storage space and luxurious features to
create the purest synthesis of luxury plus agility yet offered on two wheels.
R 1100 S
BMW's history includes a wealth of classic and sporting two-wheelers, but few
generated the same excitement--or performance--as 1973's R 90 S. Winner of the
inaugural AMA Superbike Championship, the high-performance Boxer demonstrated
that performance and handling could be mated with comfort and reliability.
Using this original watershed motorcycle as its model, the design team created
a sporting motorcycle that combines outstanding engine performance, handling
and braking with the comfort, sophistication and amenities people expect of a
BMW: the R 1100 S. Aesthetically, the bike was given a distinctive,
form-fitting shape, resulting in the same combination of wind-cheating utility
and avant-garde appearance as its R 90 S predecessor.
