Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey...Crossing boundaries is the heritage of BMW's GS
series, so it's appropriate that the newest example leads BMW's Boxer-twins
into the next millennium. Refined in every way, the R 1150 GS boasts a larger
powerplant, strengthened frame and an appropriately different look. True to its
dual-purpose nature, the new GS continues its tradition of erasing common
boundaries by combining features from the two most diverse members of the Boxer
family-the R 1200 C and the R 1100 S-then adding its own twist on the result.

The 101 mm cylinders and pistons of the R 1200 C combine with the traditional
70.5 mm stroke to produce an 1130 cc twin that's tuned specifically for
midrange torque, yet still whips up an impressive 85-horsepower @ 6750 rpm. The
R 1100 S supplies the Light Telelever fork, magnesium valve covers and
six-speed gearbox, and also provides the inspiration for the R 1150 GS's
unique, asymmetrical twin headlamps. A revised Paralever rear suspension
complements the Light Telelever. The two-piece seat retains the extended parcel
rack under the removable passenger portion, and the standard ABS II keeps the
switchable feature of past GS models, which allows the rider to disable the
antilock braking for off-road use. Completing the 1150's transformation is new
bodywork, including a removable, three-position windshield, dual front fenders
and a relocated oil-cooler, topped with a redesigned instrument panel housing
the speedometer, tachometer and standard Rider Information Display.

THE R 1150 GS:
ADVENTURE-TOURING, DEFINED

It's been two decades since BMW created the concept of a touring bike that
continues where the pavement doesn't, and the 2000 R 1150 GS represents the
fourth generation of a line that invented the term adventure-touring. And while
that original R 80 G/S left some people scratching their heads over what it
was, the latest iteration leaves them wondering where to take it. The R 1150 GS
begins with the same map-stretching abilities as its predecessors, then expands
them via an assortment of well-placed improvements.

They begin with an engine that's been re-tuned for even better off-road
response, with a significant boost in torque in the heart of the powerband,
between 3000 and 5000 rpm. A 2 mm larger bore, courtesy of the R 1200 C, bumps
engine displacement from 1085 to 1130 cc. Revised camshafts and a redesigned
high-rise exhaust system aid breathing, and contribute to a 5 horsepower boost
in peak power-from 80-horsepower @ 6750 rpm to 85-horsepower at the same rpm. A
1 lb.-ft. bump in peak torque belies the improved midrange, where the new
engine produces a minimum of 65 lb.-ft. from 3000 to 6500 rpm. A new, larger
oil-cooler keeps engine temperature in check. Backing up the new powerplant, a
six-speed transmission provides the perfect ratio for any circumstance, whether
chugging along a rutted trail or spinning along on the Interstate.

Getting this power to the ground is a revised Paralever rear driveline/
suspension that provides 7.87 inches of travel. A new tubular-steel rear
subframe strengthens the chassis, and redesigned footpeg brackets reinforce the
swingarm pivot points on the transmission cases. A long-travel version of the
Light Telelever from the R 1100 S reduces unsprung weight by nearly three
pounds, and supplies 7.48 inches of supple, bump-swallowing travel. A wide
handlebar with integral vibration damping provides excellent leverage for
off-road plodding, or flicking through the curves on a favorite backroad.

A complete facelift distinguishes the new GS from the old, with a pair of
asymmetrical headlamps dominating the front view. The upper front fender
directs air into the oil-cooler while its lower counterpart deflects more
tangible items away from bike and rider. The three-position windshield affords
the option of removing it altogether, leaving only the matte-silver topped
instrument housing for a completely different appearance. A first for the GS
series, Metallic Silver joins Night Black and Mandarin in the GS color pallet.

BMW's engineers know the difference between change and improvement, so much of
the GS remains as before. The triple-disc brakes carry over from the R 1100 GS
with only a minor change in pad material, and the standard ABS II can still be
deactivated for serious off-road use. As with the R 1100 GS, front and rear
preload is adjustable, as is rear rebound damping. The adjustable seat height,
standard saddlebag mounts and Rider Information Display also return, along with
BMW's exclusive Cross Spoke wheels and tubeless radial tires. And of course,
the R 1150 GS carries on the tradition of GS's past, by opening up new options
for the road less traveled.
