When it comes to long-distance experience, few companies outside of the U.S.
Postal Service can approach BMW's credentials. As a perfect example, witness
the R 1100 RT.
Certainly it offers the expected over-the-road accouterments: a smooth,
90-horsepower engine, saddlebags with a total of 66 liters of luggage capacity,
accessory plug, full instrumentation, and--not so expected--standard antilock
brakes. But the R 1100 RT is also notable for what's not there: weight. The
563-pound tourer weighs in well under its typical class competitor, yet still
offers a 1080-pound GVWR.
Wrapped in its form-fitting bodywork, BMW's horizon-chasing Boxer demonstrates
its wind-tunnel design in the effective way it manages airflow. Its overall
shape reduces rider and passenger buffeting, while handlebar controls for the
electric windshield allows the pilot to trim the breeze at the touch of a
button. A pair of closable ducts direct warm air to the rider's hands during
cold weather.
Those wanting a bit more than the standard R 1100 RT can check out the numerous
accessories, including an AM/FM-cassette stereo with handlebar-mounted
controls, top box, inner liners for the hard luggage, an expandable tankbag,
and anti-theft warning system, to name a few. New this year, the RT Special
Edition adds a standard comfort seat and top box, with the saddlebag and top
box lids color matched to the bike's Graphite Metallic paint. Standard R 1100
RT colors include Opal Blue Metallic, Boston Green Metallic, Amarena Red, and
Night Black.

continued after the warranty expires for a fee of $35.00 per year.
