BMW's history includes a wealth of classic and sporting two-wheelers, but few
generated the same excitement--or performance--as 1973's R 90 S. Winner of the
inaugural AMA Superbike Championship, the high-performance Boxer demonstrated
that performance and handling could be mated with comfort and reliability.
Using this original watershed motorcycle as its model, the company introduced a
sporting Boxer that combines outstanding engine performance, handling and
braking with the comfort, sophistication and amenities people expect of a BMW:
the R 1100 S.

Beginning with the most-sophisticated twin in existence, BMW's engineers raised
the performance of the fuel-injected 90-horsepower R259 engine via revised
engine management, higher-compression forged pistons, freer-breathing intake
tracts and a distinctive, underseat exhaust system. Lightweight
components--including magnesium valve covers, carbon-fiber front fender,
five-spoke alloy wheels and extruded-alloy Telelever fork sliders--shave more
than 20 pounds off the original R 1100 RS's curb weight. All-new bodywork--in
Night Black, Bright Red or Mandarin--with distinctive, asymmetric headlamps and
a form-fitting shape give the new S the same combination of wind-cheating
utility and avant-garde appearance of its R 90 S predecessor. Underneath, a new
frame, revised suspension geometry and adjustable rebound damping front and
rear make this the best-handling Boxer ever built, and its standard triple-disc
brakes--with optional antilock--make the new S every bit the standard-setter
its forebear was.

This year sees an even sportier edition of the S, which adds the taller sport
suspension and wider, 5.5-inch rear wheel to the ABS-equipped version. The
additional grip and increased cornering clearance provide riders with just that
much more of a handling advantage without compromising the S's overall
competence. Limited to a mere 200 examples, this special edition R 1100 S is
identified by its two-tone, Mandarin/Silver paint.

And like the original R 90 S, the R 1100 S takes to the Interstates as well as
it does to backroads, providing a range of BMW's touring options, including
hard saddlebags, to handle even a critical case of wanderlust. With 98
horsepower, a six-speed transmission, triple-disc brakes with available
antilock and a chassis second to none, the R 1100 S offers sporting riders not
merely the most-sophisticated twin on the market, but a comfortable,
distinctive and versatile alternative to the current one-dimensional sportbike.
