Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey... When the BMW Z3 roadster first burst upon the
scene, it was an instant hit with critics and customers alike. "BMW's designers
have opted for a look that combines just the right degree of
retro-styling...with plenty of contemporary detailing," raved "Car and Driver"
in September '95. "A roadster reminding us of fun we've been missing," wrote
the Los Angeles Times. "It has a superb all-of-a-piece chassis, razor-sharp
handling, great BMW steering, and styling that's all its own," joined "Road &
Track" in the chorus of praise in December 1996. The latter magazine, wrapping
up an almost 2-year, 50,000-mile test of an early Z3, found its design still
impressive even in March 1999: "Even after two years on the road, the styling
still gets many thumbs-up and nods of approval..." "AutoWeek" concurred with
this on August 31, 1998: "The body is beautifully curvaceous, especially in
view of the long hood from the cockpit," and added, "The 2.8-liter six and
five-speed gearbox combination is o
ne of our favorites. Smooth, reliable torque and easy shifting."
The Z3 was created to bring BMW quality and performance to the field of upscale
2-seater sports cars - a market segment that had been lagging until BMW
launched this exciting little roadster in 1996. With the Z3, the market segment
sprang back to life. Within a short period there were other new entrants; but
steady development and an expansion to three models have kept the Z3 at the
forefront of the purebred sports-car experience... and excellent value as well.
For the newest model year, BMW continues this direction with freshened styling
for the roadster models, upgraded interior design and materials, and new
Dynamic Stability Control as a standard feature on all Z3 models.
From the initial 4-cylinder roadster model, the Z3 has evolved into a
full-fledged BMW Series consisting of two roadster models and a coupe. All
three models are powered by new-generation aluminum inline 6-cylinder engines
that deliver smooth, usable power with great sound. All continue to be built on
an elegantly simple chassis that produces simply amazing handling and driving
pleasure.
