BMW introduces revolutionary VALVETRONIC engine technology. Decisive system for reaching future CO2 objectives
Tue Sep 26 12:00:00 CEST 2000 Press Release
The common feature of BMW's future reciprocating-piston gasoline engines will be VALVETRONIC. The fuel consumption of these power units will be comparable to that of current direct-injection gasoline engines, without making any compromises in emission control and without neglecting the sheer driving pleasure so typical of BMW.

Munich, Germany, September 26, 2000...The common feature of BMW's future
reciprocating-piston gasoline engines will be VALVETRONIC. The fuel consumption
of these power units will be comparable to that of current direct-injection
gasoline engines, without making any compromises in emission control and
without neglecting the sheer driving pleasure so typical of BMW.
The function principle of VALVETRONIC is the variable valve lift taking over
the task of the throttle butterfly now no longer required. The result is an
engine able to breathe freely and thus with minimum fuel consumption.
"Apart from our focus on hydrogen as the fuel of the future, VALVETRONIC is a
decisive technology for BMW in reaching our C02 objectives of the future. We
will introduce VALVETRONIC consistently and promptly in all markets worldwide
and throughout all our model series. This distinguishes us from other
manufacturers, who in some cases offer particularly fuel-efficient engines only
in certain countries or in certain models", states Dr. Burkhard Göschel, BMW
Group Board Member for Development.
The initial introduction of BMW's all-new engine generation comprising not only
VALVETRONIC, but also a large number of other highlights in technology, will be
in the course of next year.
