Munich, Germany, November 23, 2000... At the beginning of next year, the
position of Head of the BMW Group Mobile Tradition will be filled. Holger Lapp
has been appointed to succeed Christian Eich, who was sadly involved in a fatal
accident last summer.
Holger Lapp is 50, married and comes originally from Hanau. After studying
mechanical engineering and economics at the Darmstadt technical university, he
joined the company back in 1983, first in the Test Vehicle Department, and two
years later becoming Head of the Product Marketing Department. In the early
nineties, Lapp was the Press Spokesman for Engineering and the Environment
before being appointed Head of Press and Public Relations of the newly formed
engine subsidiary BMW Rolls-Royce GmbH in Oberursel in 1991. Returning to the
Head Office, Lapp was Chief Departmental Head for Product Management since 1997.
This group of tasks, his close association with vehicle engineering, his strong
interest in BMW history and the pioneering work performed by BMW in the past,
coupled with his year long involvement as a member of the BMW AG management
group referred to above have paved the way for Lapp to take on "The most
pleasant and the most interesting function which the company has to offer."
As he acknowledged during his introduction to his new colleagues, there are few
companies who - even in critical periods - pursue such a unique tradition in
such a direct fashion, as BMW does. On this basis, what needed to be done was
to harmonize as far as possible the various internal and public demands and to
continue to develop the Mobile Tradition. But his goal was additionally to
integrate both its role and its tasks more strongly into its activities within
the company in order to build a bridge between the past and the future:
"Because," he says, "The future needs tradition! The success of the BMW Group
is based in the achievements and experiences of the past. For this reason, the
achievements of the Tradition Department will be of particular importance for
our company."
