New York, NY, November 26, 2001...U.N. Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize
Laureate Kofi Annan was presented with the keys to his new official car, a BMW
750iL, by Dr. Helmut Panke, Member of the BMW Board (Munich, Germany). The
ceremony took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Dr.
Panke praised Mr. Annan for his global vision and integrative work: "As a
global player and corporate citizen, BMW salutes Mr. Annan's leadership in
international politics and world peace."
The extended lease was initiated by BMW's Head of International Direct Sales,
Dr. Hans Wieland and his team after intensive discussions with the U.N.
Security and Transportation Departments. "We are very proud to welcome the
United Nations and its highest ranking diplomat Mr. Annan as our new client,"
said Dr. Wieland. The BMW 750iL will receive its service at BMW's corporate
center, BMW of Manhattan.
BMW demonstrates leadership in corporate citizenship and social responsibility
The presentation to Mr. Annan was accompanied by a pledge for a donation to the
U.N. Children's Fund in the amount of $10,000, extended by Tom Purves, Chairman
and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. "As part of an international company, we are
committed to social responsibility and with this donation we feel we can
continue this commitment and help some of the neediest members of the society,"
explained Mr. Purves.
Community outreach programs and philanthropic engagements are an integral part
of BMW's mission in the U.S. as well as overseas. BMW's most successful
grassroots fundraising partnership in the U.S., "The Ultimate Drive for the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation" was designed to raise money
and awareness for breast cancer in over 200 cities across America. This program
alone has raised $5 million over the past five years and involved more than
150,000 participants.
