Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 20, 2011… BMW of North America announced today a four-part documentary series entitled “Wherever You Want To Go: Four Films about the Future of Mobility”, which is intended to create a broader conversation about the future of mobility and to challenge existing consumer mindsets. A trailer for the series can be seen now at www.BMWActivatetheFuture.com. The first film, “The New City,” premieres on February 1st with subsequent films premiering each Tuesday throughout the month of February. This project kicks-off a new franchise called BMW Documentaries, an initiative dedicated to crafting original, thought-provoking and entertaining content.
The project is designed to start a broader conversation that thinks
“beyond the car.” Each film will feature key thought
leaders like Syd Mead, the futurist and conceptual designer for Blade
Runner; Marissa Mayer, VP of location services at Google; Chris
Brogan, President & CEO, Human Business Works; and Buzz Aldrin,
among others talking about their view of mobility in the cities of the
future. See the full list of thought leaders below. Each of the four
films will delve into the future of mobility through the lens of the
cities we live in, our past, technology and invention and predictions
of the future.
1.
“The New City” [February 1,
2011]
How the way we live will impact
the way we move.
2.
“The Future Just Isn’t What It Used To Be”
[February 8, 2011]
Past predictions
and hopeful designs for the future of mobility.
3.
“Reinventing Mobility” [February 15,
2011]
How technology will change
mobility in the future.
4.
“How We’ll Learn To Stop Worrying and Love the
Future” [February 22, 2011]
A look at things to come and a future of possibilities
“We learned a lot from our first field trial with the MINI E, including how to make our future electric vehicles better. One thing that also became crystal clear was the need for a collective dialogue about the future of mobility. As we prepare for our second field trial with the BMW ActiveE later this year, we wanted to get that conversation started now.” said Rich Steinberg, Manager – Electric Vehicle Operations & Strategy, BMW of North America. “As an automobile company, the future of mobility is at the forefront of all of our development endeavors, and we are constantly asking ourselves how we can design cars of the future that positively impact the design of future cities.”
Developed with kirshenbaum bond senecal + partners, the films
precipitate a unique collective engineering project, dubbed
“Activate The Future” designed to build a community of
people who are passionate about working together to create the future,
rather than waiting for it to happen to them. Participants will be
encouraged to discuss, share and actively participate through use of
proprietary technology.
As part of “Activate the Future”, later this year BMW will also be recruiting ActiveE field trial participants in the metropolitan areas of New York, , Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento, as well as the state of Connecticut. Participants will contribute real-time qualitative and quantitative data to www.BMWActivateTheFuture.com, where it will be used to help predict the impact of electric vehicles on megacities of the future. This is the second effort in the EV space by the BMW Group that began in 2009 with the MINI E field trial. Participants in that field trial will continue to play an important role in helping to explore the future of mobility including the BMW ActiveE.
The BMW ActiveE will be an electric vehicle based on a BMW 1 Series Coupe that will use electric motor and battery cell technology developed in-house. It will represent the second phase of a three-phase electric vehicle development plan that will lead to a dedicated electric vehicle that will launch in 2013. The BMW ActiveE will be available for lease beginning this summer.
