Wilmington, DE – August 21, 2022… BMW congratulates Patrick Cantlay on winning the 2022 BMW Championship today at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, becoming the first golfer to repeat as tournament champion. The reigning FedExCup winner shot a final-round 69 to finish the week 14-under-par, winning the event by one stroke.

Cantlay entered Sunday atop a leaderboard filled with major champions but fell behind by two strokes during the round. His composure and world-class shot making propelled him back into the lead when he birdied the 17th hole, and he had a short par putt to seal the tournament on the final hole. With the win, Cantlay also became the first player to successfully defend a title at a FedExCup Playoffs event, doing so in front of a sold-out crowd at Delaware’s first PGA TOUR event.

“Thanks to everyone who made this such a special experience,” Cantlay said. “The fans and volunteers were amazing, and this golf course provided great theater. There was great energy all week.”

Ilka Horstmeier, BMW Group Member of the Board of Management, was joined by Western Golf Association Chairman Joe Desch, Tournament Chairman Tom Humphrey and Wilmington Country Club President Melissa Riegel to present Cantlay with the BMW Championship and J.K. Wadley trophies.

“Congratulations to Patrick Cantlay for defending his title and becoming the first player to win the BMW Championship in consecutive years,” said Horstmeier. “It has been a fantastic tournament week at a fantastic venue with great fans. Many thanks to the Wilmington Country Club, volunteers and everyone involved. In addition to hosting a great tournament, we are especially proud to know that the BMW Championship makes a difference in the lives of so many young people.”

All proceeds from the BMW Championship benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides full college scholarships to hardworking, young caddies with financial need and strong academic records. Since 2007, BMW has contributed more than $40 million to the Evans Scholars Foundation. For the upcoming school year, a record 1,100 Evans Scholars will attend 22 leading universities nationwide.

Earlier today, Viktor Hovland recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 2nd hole, resulting in BMW’s donation of the sixth BMW Championship Hole-in-One Evans Scholarship. The full, four-year tuition and housing scholarship worth $125,000 will be awarded to an Evans Scholar in Hovland’s name later this year.

On Wednesday, the annual BMW Championship Gardner Heidrick Pro-Am kicked off tournament week. A star-studded field including two-time NBA champion and North Carolina A&T golfer J.R. Smith, former NFL All-Pro receiver and fashion icon Victor Cruz and BMW Motorsport racing driver Connor De Phillippi joined PGA TOUR players in the largest fundraising event for the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Cantlay will look to become a three-peat champion when the BMW Championship returns to Chicago from August 14-20, 2023, at Olympia Fields Country Club.  Future tournament venues include Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado in 2024, Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland in 2025 and Bellerive Country Club in Missouri in 2026.
