Direct market presence secured in all EU Member States
Lisbon / Munich Today marked the official opening for the BMW Group of its own
sales subsidiary in Portugal, which started its operations on January 1 2005.
This is an important step in the implementation of the company's ongoing market
offensive and ensures direct cooperation with the dealer organisation
throughout the EU. The presence of the BMW Group in these markets means in
practice that the company is taking over the import of the vehicles itself. In
addition, one of the tasks of a sales subsidiary is to ensure that the dealer
organisation is working efficiently. It is also responsible for pricing and
product strategy, marketing, service and vehicle financing for both customers
and dealers.
With the establishment of the Portuguese subsidiary, the BMW Group is now
represented directly in 34 countries worldwide. Over 120 additional countries
are served by national importers. In all of these markets, the point of contact
for the customers will continue to be independent local dealers, through which
the majority of BMW Group vehicles are sold.
The presence of the BMW Group organisation in the individual markets is
essential if customers from Portugal to Hungary and from Norway to Greece are
to enjoy consistently high BMW Group standards of sales and service in every
dealership. In addition, subsidiaries of its own make it easier to make full
use of additional market potential.
Last year, the BMW Group in Portugal sold 5,734 automobiles. This represents a
13% increase over the previous year (5,074). The headquarters of the sales
subsidiary, which employs 50 people, is in Lisbon. The manager is Klaus
Kibsgaard.
During the last 21 years, the BMW Group had been successfully represented in
Portugal by Baviera S.A., a subsidiary of nationwide active Grupo Salvador
Caetano. Baviera S.A. will remain an important partner for the BMW Group in its
dealer network in the future.
