A dream of the fifties celebrates a major anniversary: on 22nd September 1955, BMW unveiled the BMW 507 before the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Ever since then, this model - of which just 253 examples were built - has been a dream car for anyone with a drop of petrol in their veins and an eye for beauty. A dream of the fifties celebrates a major anniversary: on 22nd September 1955,
BMW unveiled the BMW 507 before the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Ever
since then, this model - of which just 253 examples were built - has been a
dream car for anyone with a drop of petrol in their veins and an eye for
beauty. But it was a dream that would come true for only a few fortunate
motorists. Then as now, the BMW 507 has been an exclusive rarity.
265 pages devoted to a legend
To mark this anniversary, BMW Mobile Tradition has just published a monograph
that bears witness to the significance of the BMW 507. On 265 pages, its author
Dr. Karlheinz Lange outlines the history of the sports roadster which was
specifically conceived for the US market. The role of its designer, Count
Albrecht von Goertz, who drafted the stunning lines of the bodywork, is
honoured along with the car's technical features, foremost among them the
compelling state-of-the-art V8 engine under its bonnet.
But Lange also deals with the difficult circumstances surrounding the
development of this dream car and the overly optimistic profit expectations it
triggered at BMW. Press reports from the time complement the profile of this
dream car, whose elaborate, individual production process lasted just four
years but thrilled its owners, among them Elvis Presley. Beyond this, the book
also presents an intriguing, comprehensive description of original parts, along
with colour charts and insights into the delivery procedure. Up-to-date
research casts a new light on this famous sports model that is far removed from
the usual rose-tinted nostalgia. This publication constitutes a multifaceted,
lavishly illustrated "auto biography" and at the same time an important chapter
of BMW's company history.
