Whitby. BMW Canada announced today the schedule for "M Tour Canada 2006". Also
billed as "1,993 horsepower - 5 supercars - 1 day", the M Tour began May 6 at
Halifax BMW and continues until June 28 at Victoria BMW, with each of the 39
Canadian BMW Retailers hosting a showcase of the entire lineup of BMW M cars.
Renowned worldwide as the pinnacle of performance driven engineering for over
30 years, the largest selection of M models ever available in Canada now
includes the M3 (Coupe and Cabriolet), M5, M6, M Roadster and highly
anticipated M Coupe.
"As the fifth largest volume M brand market in the world, it is clear that
Canadians have a passion for these ultra high performance driving machines",
states Joe Lawrence, Director, Marketing, BMW Group Canada. "The M Tour Canada
2006 provides an unprecedented opportunity for Canadians to share that
passion."
The M Tour Canada 2006 will take place in the form of an invitation only M Day,
or, M Night event at each BMW Retailer. The stars of the show, the 5 M models,
will be supplemented with features of BMW M brand Lifestyle accessories, music
and video, and in some cases prize draws for visitors. Numerous BMW Retailers
have also joined forces with local chapters of the BMW Club of Canada who will
be displaying a range of M models through history.
The dates for M Tour Canada 2006 are available at bmw.ca in the M model
section. Interested participants are asked to contact their local Retailer for
further information.
The M brand plays a pivotal role at BMW as evidenced by the words of Robert A.
Lutz, BMW AG Board Member Sales, back in 1972 at the christening of the
youngest subsidiary of BMW AG at the time, BMW Motorsport GmbH. "A company is
like a human being. As long as it goes in for sports, it is fit, well-trained,
full of enthusiasm and performance." Today the company is called BMW M. But it
is just as fit, well-trained, full of enthusiasm and performance as it was 34
years ago.
The entire lineup of 2006 BMW M models for Canada include:
BMW M3 - Coupe and Cabriolet
The original M3 debuted in 1986 and, bred to compete in the European Touring
Car championship, was the first BMW to be developed for both series production
and motorsport. Every M3 since has maintained this motorsport orientation while
providing the ultimate in road-going dynamics.
Every bit as comfortable on the racetrack as it is on the highway, the
third-generation of the legendary M3 is available in both Coupe and Convertible
versions, both powered by BMW M's award winning, 3.2-litre in-line six cylinder
engine featuring dual overhead cams, double-VANOS variable valve timing and six
individual throttle plates, with an output of 333 horsepower at 7,900 rpm and
262 foot pounds of torque at 4,900 rpm.
Coupled to a six-speed manual transmission and speed-sensitive M variable
differential lock, both M3 family members exhibit an impeccable balance of
comfort, safety, handling and braking, while sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 5.2
seconds. An optional race-bred 6-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with
Drivelogic is available on both models, shifting via either the console shifter
or steering wheel shift "paddles".
The Convertible features fully automatic electric top operation and Automatic
Rollover Protection to make open-air M motoring convenient and
confidence-inspiring.
BMW M5
In 1985, BMW introduced to the world a high-performance sedan that defined the
segment and has continued to reign as the benchmark for luxury, comfort and
race-car performance, in the guise of an everyday business vehicle: the iconic
M5.
A first not only for M5 but also for any production sedan in the world, the
2006 M5 is powered by a high-revving V10 engine developed and perfected over
the years through BMWs extensive experience and success in Formula 1 racing.
Setting not only a new standard for available power, producing 500 horsepower @
7750 rpm and 383 ft.-lb. of torque at 6100 rpm, the M5 V10 engine's lightweight
construction provides an unprecedented advantage in weight reduction and
distribution.
Also new to M5 and another first in automotive history, the M5's 7-Speed
Sequential Gearbox with "Drivelogic" technology and 11 individual shift
programs. As in previous iterations of the M5, the athletic and competent
5-Series platform, with all aluminum suspension, Electronic Damper Control and
"adjustable" DSC, has received race-bred modifications that make the new M5 the
most competent performance sedan on the planet, capable of 0-100 km/h sprints
in 4.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
BMW M6
It has been more than 15 years since the last M6 was available in North
America. Like the M635Csi from the 1980's, the all-new M6 features a
race-inspired drivetrain, which it shares with its M5 Sedan stable mate. With
a 500 horsepower V10 engine and seven- speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG),
the new M6 is capable of extraordinary performance - 0-100 km/h sprints in 4.6
seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
It offers an unparalleled capability for a driver-tailored driving experience
and the first use of a carbon fibre roof in a production vehicle, all wrapped
within the stylish lines of the BMW 6 Series.
BMW M Roadster
The ultra high performance member of the Z4 family, the M Roadster combines the
best attributes of the Z4 chassis with M-technology. Powered by BMW M's award
winning, 3.2-litre in-line six cylinder engine featuring dual overhead cams,
double-VANOS variable valve timing and six individual throttle plates with an
output of 333 horsepower at 7,900 rpm and 262 foot pounds of torque at 4,900
rpm. The new BMW M Roadster is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission
and a speed-sensitive M variable differential lock.
The M Roadster distinguishes itself with aggressive M styling, including front
air dam, large air intake scoops, exclusive double-spoke design 18-inch alloy
wheels and the clearly visible round tailpipes which have become a hallmark of
BMW M design.
BMW M Coupé
The second-generation M Coupé, powered by the same award-winning 3.2 litre
double-VANOS inline six-cylinder M engine as its Roadster and M3 siblings,
commands 333 horsepower at 7900 rpm and 262 ft-lb of torque - 80% of which is
available from just 2,000 rpm.
Equipped with a short-ratio 6 speed manual gearbox and M variable differential
lock, the M Coupé is capable of scintillating sprints to 100 km/h in an
effortless 5.0 seconds. Massive compound cross-drilled disc brakes measuring
345mm in the front and 328mm in the rear and 18-inch M double-spoke alloy
wheels mated with high-performance Z-rated tires complete the M Coupé
performance profile ensuring outstanding handling and braking capacity to match
the exhilarating performance of the M thoroughbred engine.
In addition to its unique and distinctive profile, the M Coupé platform also
boasts a significant functional advantage in terms of chassis stiffness with an
unprecedented torsional stiffness of 32,000 Nm per degree, setting a new record
in its segment and contributing not only to optimal handling dynamics but an
exceptional level of passive safety.
The much-anticipated BMW M Coupé arrives in Canadian BMW showrooms this summer.
Accolades for BMW M Engines
Engine of the Year award
On May 10, 2006, at the Engine Expo 2006 in Stuttgart, BMW's extraordinary V10
high performance engine powering the M5 and M6 garnered, for the second
successive time, both the "International Engine of the Year" and the coveted
"Best Performance Engine 2006" awards, taking first place in the over-4.0 litre
class.
BMW's legendary 333 horsepower 3.2 litre straight-six engine which powers the
M3, M Roadster and M Coupe, was also honoured, winning the 3.0 to 4.0 litre
class for an unprecedented sixth time in succession.
This follows a similarly remarkable feat in 2005, when BMW became the first car
manufacturer to receive six different prizes within a year at the annual Engine
of the Year Awards, the world's most prestigious engine competition. In
addition to first prize as "Engine of the Year", awarded in June 2005 at the
Engine Expo 2005 in Stuttgart to the 500 horsepower V10 high-performance engine
powering the BMW M5 and M6, BMW engines also earned the following awards:
- V10 5.0-litre engine in the M5/M6: Best New Engine 2005
- V10 5.0-litre engine in the M5/M6: Best Performance Engine 2005
- V10 5.0-litre engine in the M5/M6: Winner in the class exceeding 4.0 litres
- 3.2-litre six cylinder engine in the M3: Winner in the class 3.0 to 4.0
litres.
This makes BMW the most successful brand to participate in the Engine of the
Year competition, having been awarded 31 trophies over a period of eight years.
Auto World 10 Best Engines award
Ward's Auto World magazine presented BMW with their seventeenth "10 Best
Engines" award in a ceremony at the Detroit Auto Show in February of 2004, for
the acclaimed 3.2-liter in-line 6-cylinder M3 engine, its ninth such award.
According to Ward's, "Generating 333 horsepower from just 3.2 liters is easy
enough with forced induction, but BMW engineers deliver the 3.2-liter's
world-class specific output via a normally aspirated design that incorporates a
deliciously advanced electronic throttle control system with an individual
throttle body for each cylinder." Specific output is a measure of engine
efficiency. The M3's specific output, at 103 horsepower per liter, is the
highest for any naturally aspirated piston engine in the awards group.
