Munich. In the automobile industry, the BMW Group is the world leader in
corporate sustainability. This was the conclusion reached by the SAM Group in
its current evaluation of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). This
means that the BMW Group has been able to successfully defend its number one
position of last year, and makes it the only company in the sector to have been
listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World and in the European Dow
Jones Sustainability STOXX Index without a break since the establishment of the
Index in 1999. The volume of the financial assets managed according to these
indexes is currently about five billion US dollars.
The SAM Group analyses 2,500 companies each year in terms of their ecological,
social and economic performance and selects the best 10% for the Dow Jones
Sustainability Indexes. Industry-specific challenges are also taken into
account. In the automobile industry, for example, these are climate change, or
ecological and social standards at supplier companies.
Sustainability is part of the corporate strategy in the BMW Group. Engineers at
the BMW Group, for example, have been working for years on reducing fuel
consumption. Besides optimising both petrol and diesel engines, this also
includes electrifying the drive and converting hydrogen in combustion engines.
With BMW CleanEnergy, the company is presenting its vision of CO2-free driving.
Environmental management systems at the production sites help to prevent
possible negative effects on the environment. High social standards for the
employees of the BMW Group have been implemented in practice at all locations
for decades. In addition, the BMW Group takes on a wide range of social
activities, not only in the vicinity of their locations, but also worldwide.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes family is made up of global and European
indexes. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was the first global sustainability
index to be created, in 1999, and has since then been published each year by
the SAM Group, based in Zurich, in cooperation with Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX
Limited.
