München Eichenried. 15,000 cheering spectators witnessed: The final day of the
BMW International Open 2007 at Golfclub München Eichenried lived up to
everyone's expectations: glorious sunshine provided the setting for a
sensational leaderboard tussle between eventual tournament winner Niclas Fasth
and an on-form Bernhard Langer, who stated: "It's fantastic to play in front of
your home crowd. I have enjoyed every single moment". Also infected by the
excellent atmosphere was Stefan Krause, Member of the Board of Management of
the BMW AG: "I would like to thank all the professional players for their great
performance during this tournament week and my sincere congratulations to
Niclas Fasth's victory."

"Niclas Fasth is a great player, and he probably won't let this victory chance
slip away," predicted Langer after posting a round of 67, and contemplating a
possible play-off. The Swede was true to Langer's word: he had already sunk
birdies on Holes 3 and 7 at the start of his round to move clear of his closest
rival José-Filipe Lima. The Portuguese pro could only make bogeys on both 6 and
7. Fasth's lead over Langer was cut back, however, when the Swede hit a
double-bogey on Hole 10. But an immediate birdie on the next hole stretched his
lead once again. It was a lead that he would never lose - and he went on to
move two shots clear of Langer with a birdie on 17.

This meant that Bernhard Langer's first BMW International Open victory would
yet again remain elusive on his 16th attempt. Nevertheless, the 49-year old
local hero, frequently had the spectators in raptures with his sublime display
of golf. After starting his final round with a birdie, Langer followed up with
more on Holes 5, 6 and 8.

But it wasn't meant to be - just like in 1992, 1995, 2000 and 2002 - and he
"only" finished runner-up, a position he shared with José-Filipe Lima.
Nevertheless, Langer won't leave Munich disappointed. He certainly never would
have thought that he would almost top the final day leaderboard after carding a
round of 76 on day one - hampered by a neck injury - and finishing the opening
day joint 135th out of 165 starters. "Had it not been a home tournament, I
would have given up on Thursday for sure." And besides, he has enjoyed had a
"really successful" week.
"It really felt it was my tournament to win. I've played some of the best golf
of my life this week", Niclas Fasth happily stated after Krause had handed over
the trophy and the 333,330 euro winner's cheque to deserved winner. "The
course here in München Eichenried truly has the quality to host a championship
and it was in perfect shape. All of us enjoyed competing here and so I would
like to thank the sponsors and organisers for a very nice week" added the
Swede.
