BMW Canada Inc. announced today the largest single contract in its history -
the sale of 20 R1100RT-P authority motorcycles to the Montreal City Police
Department. The motorcycles purchased from Monette Sports of Laval, Quebec,
were delivered to the Montreal City Police Department on June 25, 1998.
The BMW R1100RT-P ("P" for Police) is based on the BMW R1100RT civilian model,
but is equipped with features that tailor it specifically for official use. It
is powered by BMW's modern two-cylinder, four-stroke Boxer engine which
delivers 90 horsepower at 7,250 rpm. Comfort and safety features include BMW's
second generation antilock braking system which operates independently on both
front and rear wheels (important in panic braking situations), an electrically
adjustable windshield to allow riders to tailor wind flow to riding speed and
body proportions, electrically heated handgrips, an adjustable shift lever, and
front and rear protection bars. In addition to special lighting and siren
systems, the BMW R1100RT-P also comes equipped with: auxiliary cooling fans
that are essential for an engine that must be kept idling or running at low
speeds for long periods without overheating, a second isolated battery for
operating the police radio and lights with the engine shut off and a large 700
W alternator to kee
p the batteries charged during long duties.
"It is truly a compliment to have been chosen as the exclusive motorcycle
supplier of the Montreal Police Department," expresses Thomas J. Plucinsky,
Manager, Motorcycle Division of BMW's Canadian operations. "BMW Canada is very
pleased that the R1100RT-P has been recognised by the Montreal City Police for
their consistent reliability, low operation costs and unique features."
As part of the sale, two Montreal City Police riding instructors have attended
the BMW Rider Training course in Berlin, Germany designed specifically for
authority personnel. This course teaches the skills required to obtain the
maximum benefit from the technology and performance of the R1100RT-P model.
Upon returning to Montreal, these instructors are responsible for updating the
skills of the Montreal City Police officers who will be operating the new fleet
of motorcycles.
BMW Canada Inc., located in Whitby, Ontario, was established in 1986 as a
wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW AG, responsible for the distribution of BMW
luxury/performance automobiles and motorcycles. BMW Canada's Motorcycle
Division is represented by a network of 11 motorcycle retailers across the
country. Currently, ten police departments in Canada operate BMW motorcycles in
their fleets.
