Whitby, Ontario ... In May, a new engine variant of the BMW X5 will be
available in Canada. Wearing the X5 3.0i badge, this SAV houses BMW's new
3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine (225 bhp @ 5900 rpm), and will be priced
at $56,800. Just like its 4.4-litre sibling, the newest Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) combines offroad driving qualities with excellent driving characteristics
on the road as well as superb active and passive safety.
"Since the introduction of the 8-cylinder X5 4.4i ($68,800) last December, BMW
Canada has sold over 400 vehicles," explains Hendrik von Kuenheim, President
and CEO of BMW Canada Inc.."Now, with the introduction of a second X5 variant,
BMW is offering consumers a more affordable entry into the X5 family, opening
up a larger segment of the market. You will see sales soar as a result."
The new X5 3.0i comes standard with numerous features including the choice of a
manual transmission or a Steptronic automatic transmission at no-charge, 17"
wheels, automatic climate control, heated seats, Xenon headlights, in-dash CD,
and a full size spare. Additional equipment and three optional packages
(Navigation, Sport, Premium) can also be added to further customise the vehicle.
Featuring the new BMW six-cylinder engine, the X5 3.0i accelerates from 0 - 100
km/h in an estimated 8.5 seconds and in 8.8 seconds with the five-speed
Steptronic automatic transmission - approximately one second slower than with
the eight-cylinder X5 4.4i. Top speed is 202 km/h, and fuel consumption is 12.7
litres per 100 km or 12.9 litres with the automatic model (estimated using
premium fuel). Like its predecessors, the new engine naturally offers that
proverbial silken smoothness which has already made BMW's six-cylinders
world-famous. (Based on European data - North American data not yet available).
When developing the new engine, BMW's specialists focused not only on extra
power, but also on particularly "beefy" torque at lower engine speeds.
Accordingly, the engine offers 90 per cent of its maximum torque of 214 lb-ft
(291 Nm) @ 3500 rpm.
The comprehensive BMW concept for active and passive safety is demonstrated in
the new 3 litre X5 by the enormous number of electronic devices designed to
assist the driver in all road conditions.
The X5 3.0i comes standard with front ventilated disc brakes, electronic
limited slip differential, a self-levelling rear axle, ABS, all-wheel-drive
Automatic Stability Control (ASC-X), Corner Braking Control (CBC), Dynamic
Braking Control (DBC), and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is
supplemented by Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X) and Hill Decent Control
(HDC). HDC is an intelligent downhill gradient control system for steep
slopes. By integrating this system, BMW has eliminated the need for a reduction
gear box, and thus eliminated the extra weight of such equipment. This is one
of the ways that an SAV is different from an SUV.
With respect to passive safety, BMW's fundamental target was to achieve the
supreme level of safety already offered by BMW sedans, and to combine this
superiority with the concept benefits of a Sports Activity Vehicle. The result
is a lightweight unitary all-steel structure with six standard airbags
(including head protection system); plus two rear side airbags as an option.
The BMW Group in Canada, based in Whitby, Ontario, is a wholly-owned subsidiary
of BMW AG and is responsible for the distribution of BMW luxury performance
automobiles, Sports Activity Vehicles, motorcycles, Land Rovers and beginning
in 2001 the new MINI. The BMW Group is represented by a total network of 48
independent BMW and Land Rover retailers and 15 independent BMW motorcycle
retailers.
