BMW's new Integral ABS debuted worldwide at the INTERMOT Motor Show in Munich
last September and is now set to enter the market. As already announced, this
revolutionary braking system is scheduled to become a standard feature on the K
1200 LT as of February 2001 and will be introduced as an option on the R 1100
S, following the latest decision taken by BMW. The K 1200 LT luxury tourer will
feature the fully integral version of BMW's Integral ABS, while the most sporty
and dynamic of all BMW machines, the R 1100 S, will come with the semi-integral
version. The dates for the introduction of BMW Integral ABS in other models
have yet to be determined.
BMW Integral ABS uses the technical potentials of the newly developed third
generation of ABS, adding additional functions and features. For example, two
innovations seen worldwide for the first time on the motorcycle are the
electrohydraulic brake servo and adaptive brake power distribution. In
addition, there is the new evo brake on the front wheel and an integral brake
system in two different versions. On the fully integral version, the handbrake
and footbrake levers act simultaneously on the front and rear wheel brakes. On
the semi-integral version, designed for more dynamic high-performance models,
the handbrake lever acts simultaneously on the front and rear wheel brakes
while, as before, the footbrake lever acts only on the rear wheel brake.
While BMW Integral ABS offers a lot more features, it does not cost any more
than the ABS II system ($1,800 Cdn) which is already featured current BMW
models.
BMW is also clearly the pioneer in ABS technology after becoming the world's
first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce motorcycle ABS back in 1988. Since
Spring 2000, BMW has been the only manufacturer in the world to offer ABS on
all of its production models, either as a standard feature or as an option. And
since they realise that ABS on motorcycles offers even greater active safety
than on automobiles, more than 250,000 customers have opted for a BMW
motorcycle with ABS.
BMW Canada Inc., based in Whitby, Ontario, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW
AG and is responsible for the distribution of BMW luxury performance
automobiles, Sports Activity Vehicles, motorcycles, and beginning in 2002 the
new MINI. BMW is represented by a total network of 32 independent BMW retail
centres and 16 independent BMW motorcycle retailers across the country.
