Whitby, Ontario ... BMW Canada's Driver Training Program kicks off its second
successful year on March 29th at Downsview Park in Toronto. The program will
run for almost eight months (until November) and will also include stops in
Vancouver and Montreal. New this year is the addition of Level 2 Perfection
Driver Training for those 1504 drivers who completed Level 1 Advanced Driver
Training last year.
BMW Driver Training is the first manufacturer-based driver training program in
Canada and consists of three progressive courses ranging from Advanced to
Fascination. All holders of a Canadian driving licence are qualified to take
part, regardless of whether they own a BMW or not.
The majority of the registrants are booking BMW Driver Training online through
www.bmw.ca. And it is not just BMW enthusiasts that are signing up. BMW Driver
Training is becoming increasingly popular as corporate outings and incentive
programs.
BMW Advanced Driver Training ($455 plus tax) is offered as a one-day foundation
course that focuses on inner city driving. Conducted in a fleet of BMW 330i
sedans, the Advanced Driver Training Course covers the fundamentals of good
steering, braking and handling on a variety of road conditions.
Students in the next level, BMW Perfection Driver Training ($870 plus tax), are
taught in both BMW 330i sedans and BMW M3 Coupes. The exercises are conducted
at higher inter-city speeds and provides participants the skills to react to a
variety of critical emergency situations. This course is highlighted by a
timed autocross to complete the session.
The final level of the program, BMW Fascination Driver Training, will be
offered next year. Individuals participating in this two-day course will learn
how to better command their vehicle at highway speeds and how to master a
greater skill level. The two-day course will be conducted using vehicles from
BMW's highly acclaimed M series and will include several track exercises.
BMW Driver Training activities were originally developed in Germany and have
now spread across the globe. Today, BMW Driver Training in Canada joins a
network of courses which include the USA, Australia and Japan with further
programs in development in Italy, France and Switzerland. In Canada, the
program is based on the highly successful German model and will be implemented
in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver throughout 2002. Additional cities will be
added in the future.
The travelling program utilises large areas of tarmac that provide a great
degree of safety run-off areas, such as Downsview Park (formerly Downsview
Airport) in Toronto, the PMG Test and Research Centre in Blainville Quebec, and
the Fraser Valley Tradex in Vancouver. The program descends on each location
with tonnes of training equipment, a special training pavilion and up to 20
cars. Staffed by dedicated BMW trainers (who have been trained in Germany) and
supported by a team of logistics and administration professionals, the BMW
Driver Training program is run entirely by BMW Canada.
BMW Canada's Driver Training Chief Instructor is Pierre Savoy. Having been
involved in driver trainings since 1983 in Canada, the United States and in
Europe, he is experienced in race driving instruction, collision avoidance
courses and skid control schools. Pierre Savoy has trained race drivers such as
Jacques Villeneuve and Patrick Carpentier, emergency response organizations
including Police forces, ambulance drivers and fire fighters across the
country, and RCMP officers.
Each year, more than 10,000 enthusiastic motorists world-wide participate in
BMW driver training activities - a carefully conceived and constantly updated
training program based on the practical analysis of accidents.
