Knockhill. Ross Curnow (Panther Motorsport) took the first win of the season
for a Rookie driver in race one, while Norway's Stian Sørlie (Fortec
Motorsport) became another first time winner with victory in race two. Their
wins were not their only podium visits as Stian was second in race one and Ross
third in race two. Championship newcomer Matt Howson (Team SWR Pioneer) gave
the team its first podium with third in race one, while Joao Urbano (Carlin
Motorsport - Team Portugal) took second in race two.
The championship is still being led by Philip Glew (Soper Sport) but crashing
out on lap one and a disappointing race two meant he was not able to take
advantage of championship rivals Tim Bridgman and Josh Fisher (Motaworld
Quantexe Racing) also having bad weekends. Ross has a very impressive lead in
the Rookie class from Sam Bird (Carlin Motorsport) and Jordan Wise (Soper
Sport), but no one scored full points this weekend as race two was red flagged
when Duarte Felix da Costa (Carlin Motorsport - Team Portugal) rolled his car
after running into the back of Jordan.
Ross's win was not an easy one as he had Stian in his wing mirrors for the
entire race. "I had to stay steady and consistent as he was right behind me. I
made a mistake in the hairpin on one lap but was able to keep him behind. It
was hard work but it is a great feeling to have won my first race in the
series." Stian was delighted with his win and said: "I have been fighting for
this for a long time. I knew I had the speed and was just struggling with my
confidence."
Race one was run under the safety car from lap two to lap five while debris
from incidents involving Philip Glew, Simon Walker Hansell (Panther Motorsport)
and Joao Urbano (Carlin Mootorsport - Team Portugal) were cleared up. Philip
retired on the spot after going into the tyre wall while Simon retired after
four laps and Joao went on to finish. Curnow drove a text book race despite
being under pressure all the time. Fellow Rookie Jack Goldstraw (Panther
Motorsport) had his best result of the season finishing sixth overall while
Croft winner, Josh, was disappointed with seventh but drove a cautious race to
score points.
Matt Howson was on pole for race two and led at the end of race one, but then
went wide on lap two and dropped back to fourth. Stian was able to build up a
one and a half second lead, but a hard charging Joao, who started sixth on the
grid, had cut this by two thirds when the race was stopped. Behind them
championship rivals Philip and Tim were battling for minor points while Jack
Goldstraw was also trying to get by the rivals.
Rounds 15 and 16 will be at Brands Hatch on the 22nd August.
