Munich. On the occasion of the INTERMOT motorshow, BMW Motorrad in announcing
the expansion of the K series with transversely installed four-cylinder in-line
engine. The company is presenting a purist, completely unfaired high
performance roadster. It was developed on the technical basis of the K 1200 S
sports bike presented in July. As the head of BMW Motorrad, Dr Herbert Diess
announced at the press conference, this new model with the designation K 1200 R
is definitely only planned for the second half of 2005. However, the
development of the new motorcycle has already progressed very far and is in its
last stage. Dr Diess went on to say that with the the presentation of this
roadster, BMW Motorrad is continuing to emphasise the announced orientation
towards greater sportiness of the brand. The new K model will not be shown
during the motorshow's public days.
At the motorshow BMW Motorrad is focusing its full attention on the K 1200 S
high performance sports bike presented in July which is celebrating its public
world premiere at the INTERMOT.

The K 1200 R roadster is a high performance riding machine featuring all the
positive characteristics, riding safety and technical elements of the K 1200 S.
The drive unit and the chassis have been taken over from the K 1200 S with
adaptations being made in detail. A high-level of riding fun and outstanding
riding safety are guaranteed. In the dynamics and agility disciplines, the K
1200 R exceeds even the high level of the K 1200 S already certified by the
specialist press. The front BMW Duolever suspension angle is slightly steeper
and the castor is slightly shorter. This promises to further increase the
already outstanding handling compared to the K 1200 S.

As far as the engine is concerned only the air routing has been adapted.
Maximum performance will be minimally lower than in the K 1200 S but above 118
kW (160 bhp). The torque curve is almost identical with that of the K 1200 S in
most engine speed ranges. Gearbox spacing is also the same, only the rear axle
ratio of is a bit shorter which has a further positive effect on acceleration.
In many disciplines riding performance exceeds the standard in the class of
naked bikes by far and is on a level with the K 1200 S.

New features are the body sections in the fuel tank and rear area as well as
the distinctive front dual headlamps with its matt chrome surface colouring.
Only a small windshield covers the front section above the headlamp. In spite
of its small size it provides the rider with a surprisingly good wind
protection.

Compared to the K 1200 S the seat bench is similar in shape yet slightly
narrower in the front section. This supports an especially active, forward
oriented seating position and improves ground reachability for small riders
even further. The steering bridge was also newly shaped so that the rider sits
in a slightly more upright position. The instruments are also different from
the K 1200 S. The arrangement of speedometer and rev counter is also new and
features newly designed white dials with black figures.

In the version shown, the motorcycle mainly corresponds to the future
production model. Further equipment features and colour variants will be
announced at the launch of the series. Currently the price has not been
finalised.

INTERMOT 2004 new BMW Motorrad rider equipment with many innovations:

At this year's INTERMOT in Munich in September, BMW Motorrad will be presenting
two new products and a complete leather collection with suit, boots and gloves.
A product developed by the Swiss company TFL reflects the rays of the sun. The
TFL Cool System technology is used in the new collection in the leather suit
Black Leather and in the new leather suit ProRace - this is the first time it
has been integrated into a fabric suit. The Streetguard 2 is also the first BMW
motorcycle suit to be developed using the new XCR membrane by Gore.

All products are available from spring 2005 from BMW Motorrad dealerships.
Prices have not yet been set.

Top class bodyguard: Streetguard 2 suit

Its predecessor was already highly appreciated for its outstanding qualities in
terms of active and passive safety. Streetguard 2 has got even more to offer.
With the Goretex XCR (Extended Comfort Range) membrane, breathability is
increased by 25%. The new membrane technology has been integrated in a
three-layer laminate between the wear-resistant Armacor-Cordura upper material
and the lining material.

TFL Cool System technology, already used in one BMW Motorrad leather suit,
reflects the rays of the sun and prevents the textile from heating up
excessively. The black upper material thus always remains as cool as the
lighter suit material.
Newly developed BMW CE hip protectors are used as standard in the suit. They
are flat, one-piece and ergonomically shaped, very comfortable and
impact-absorbing. The CE-certified BMW back protector is also a standard
feature. At the knees and shins there are height-adjustable ProSafe protectors
- also placed at the shoulders, elbows and underarms.

Streetguard 2 has not only been developed in terms of style and in 40 different
sizes to suit the needs of both men and women. The design also has separate
ladies' and men's variations, with distinctively conceived reflective inserts.
The ladies' jacket highlights the figure and also has comfort stretch inserts
in the rear shoulder area.

For the entire suit there is a removable thermal lining. Two water-resistant
pockets are provided in both jacket and trousers. The jacket also has
waterproof ventilation zips on the sleeves and windproof and waterproof
removable storm collar. As well as a short zip of 40 cm, the jacket and
trousers can also be connected by means of an all-round zip.

The ladies' and men's jackets are available in the colours stone grey or black,
the trousers for both versions are black.

BMW Motorrad ProRace collection: For all present and future K 1200 S riders

For all BMW Motorrad riders with sporting ambitions, BMW Motorrad now offers
the ProRace collection in time for the coming season. It consists of a suit,
boots and gloves. The riders from the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup have contributed
their knowledge and experience from motorcycle racing into the development of
the line. The articles are made from high quality materials, such as robust
nappa and soft kangaroo leather, kevlar and carbon hard shells. The TFL Cool
System technology employed in the ProRace suit reduces temperatures to a level
which is comfortable for the wearer.

All products will be available from BMW dealers from spring 2005. The prices
have yet to be set.

ProRace Suit

The two-piece suit is made of robust nappa leather with a thickness of 1.2-1.4
mm, and is designed to be worn in racing situations. The wearer wants to feel
comfortable without having to think about it. Wearer comfort is a particularly
important aspect of racing suits. In the case of the ProRace suit, leather
stretch zones along the shoulders and rear waistband and above the knees ensure
a good fit. Stretch fabric is used in the arm and leg sections. The TFL Cool
System helps the rider to concentrate fully on the road and his motorcycle.
Leather which integrates this technology reflects the sun's rays, reducing the
suit's surface temperature to around 20-25°C. The temperature passed on to the
rider's skin is 8-12°C lower than with normal black leather.

Soft and pleasant to wear are the PR-1 CE protectors on the shoulders, elbows,
hips, coccyx and knees. The back is protected by a large-area, multi-ply CE
protector. Inserts are employed on the chest, back and upper arms that reflect
light, allowing the rider to be seen at a considerable distance.

For all cornering fiends, we also have special knee protectors for use when you
want to adopt a leaning position. If you prefer things to be a bit more
discreet, you can also use the leather covers supplied with the knee pads.

The jacket has two inside pockets and an additional pocket is also available in
the trousers, so there are plenty of opportunities for storing small items.
The colours of the suit match every motorcycle. The jacket is black with silver
sleeves and the BMW Motorrad text label attached to the left upper arm. The
trousers are completely black and a small BMW propeller is placed on the left
of the waistband.

ProRace boots

Conceived as road sports boots and designed to match the suit, the black
ProRace boots are available in all sizes between 39 and 48. The outer material
is 100 per cent leather and the thickness is approx. 1.8 mm.

As you would expect from sports boots, the ProRace has a scrape protector in
the form of a screw-on slider. This can also be ordered a spare. The shaft
supports the boots' sports orientation and is inclined to the front, for a
racing-style sitting posture.

To protect the legs from a frontal impact, hard shells made of carbon are
positioned to the front of the shins and heels. The latter also includes foam
shock absorbers and a reflective strip above the carbon heel. The rubber sole
is petrol and oil resistant, and the insole above it retains its form through
the use of non-deforming hardened nylon.

As with the ProRace suit, the boots have been designed with comfort in mind.
The zip has been moved towards the front, where it is protected with velcro
strips. This makes the boots easier to put on. The calf width can be adjusted
in two areas over a broad range. Stretch zones on the instep and heel have been
included to enhance wearer comfort. Perforated leather is used to ensure good
ventilation inside the boot. The inner sole, which is fixed to the shoe with a
permanent adhesive, performs the same task. It absorbs fluid and transports it
away from the foot.

ProRace gloves

The black ProRace gloves with the grey palms are clearly designed for the
sports segment. They are made completely of kangaroo leather, a material which
is extremely soft, pleasant to wear, and stretches easily. They are available
in the sizes 6, 6 ½ to 12-12 ½.

The upper section of the ProRace gloves have underlayers made of kevlar and
shock-absorbent foam. This visco-elastic material was originally used in
aerospace and is characterised by its slow form recovery time. Additionally,
the foam hardens automatically when a fast-acting, point force suddenly comes
into play. It is therefore a very effective insulator against bangs and knocks.
Special double-fabric 100 percent kevlar is employed at points that are
particularly susceptible to damage from falling. These inlays are extremely
non-abrasive and offer thumb balls, hand sides and little fingers particularly
effective protection. A carbon hard shell is positioned on the glove surface.
This has been designed for a perfect fit in three different sizes. The underarm
is surrounded by an extended gauntlet, which the wearer can fasten with a
velcro strip on the wrist and an adjustable velcro fastener on the gauntlet
itself. The gauntlet has an additional protector in the form of a
leather-laminated carbon shell.

The ProRace gloves are colourfast and sweat resistant. The characteristic shape
of the preformed, non-padded lower hand is designed to grip the clutch or brake
lever. A newly developed cut with slanted fingers prevents creases from
appearing on the gloves and the use of flat quilted stitching avoids the
formation of pressure points.
