Over 20,000 spectators turned out at France’s fine St.Jean d’Angely circuit for the sixth date of the world MX2 motocross championship. It was back to the full line-up for the Husqvarna Motocross Team By Ricci Racing as Belgian Nick Triest rejoined Lupino and Larrieu after three months out due to injury.
After having taken tenth place in Saturday’s qualifying, Alex Lupino had a particularly unlucky start in the first race, when a fall on the second lap ended his chances of finishing in the top positions. Lupino, in spite of being lapped immediately after coming off, showed himself capable of keeping pace with the leaders, even marking up the third fastest time, after having set the second fastest time in the morning’s warm up. Despite Lupino’s great comeback, he was unable to finish in the points (for the first time since the beginning of the championship) and finished in twenty-first place.
Starting out in twelfth place in the second race, Lupino on the Husqvarna TC250, battled his way up to sixth final position, showing exceptional speed in the final stages of the race.
Lupino now holds the eighth overall position in the world championship after six GPs.
Loic Larrieu also put in a good race with sixteenth and fourteenth place finishes, keeping a good pace and earning himself a place in the next GP to be held in Portugal next week at the Aueda circuit.
Nick Triest, back after three months off injured over the winter months, took advantage of the race as a kind of training session, avoiding taking any excessive risks.
Alex Lupino: “Shame about the first race! I was really unlucky and made an unforgivable mistake when I fell on the second lap. Today I felt really good and my times vouch for it. I hung in there on the second race and it paid off as I managed to go from ninth position to sixth in the last ten minutes. In the championship standings I’m in eighth place too, and I’ll take heart from that in spite of the zero from the first race. ”
World Championship MX2 standings after six races: 1. Herlings (KTM) 270, 2. Searle (Kawasaki) 248, 3.Van Horebeek (KTM) 231, 4.Roelants (Kawasaki) 188, 5. Anstie (Honda) 160, 6 Tixier (KTM) 159, 7. Nicholls (KTM) 144, 8. Lupino (Husqvarna) 118.
