Lupino makes up ground…on the sand.

The treacherous sand track of Lierop, Holland played host to the third to last GP of a long 2012 MX season. Saturday’s qualifying saw Alessandro Lupino take fifteenth place, followed by Ivo Monticelli, marking up his best qualifying time so far, both on the new Husqvarna TC250R. Nick Triest was out of the running still battling with an injury to his left shoulder. Lupino began the first heat amongst the main group with Monticelli close behind as the race got underway. Alessandro made a fine effort to make up ground reaching ninth place close behind the leader’s group. Unluckily, a fall made him lose pace before finally finishing in eleventh place.

Monticelli, after a good initial recovery in which he made up several places, was prematurely forced out off the track.

As the second race got underway, the two again found themselves amongst the main pack and began to fight their way forward. Lupino managed to make it as far as eleventh after only a few laps, but the difficult track conditions wouldn’t allow him to progress further.

Monticelli did a great job finishing in eighteenth final position, on a track hardly suited to Italian riders.

Alessandro Lupino: “It has been the most difficult race of the championship so far. I kept up a good pace in the first race and was pulling back places, but after falling I was unable to keep up the rhythm. It was a shame because I felt up to it and could have regained positions. I got off to a flyer in the second race, and I tried to make up ground without errors. The condition of the track really limited me and I began to feel tiredness in the first race, so I tried not to make any mistakes and take the valuable points. On the whole, I’m happy with the way it turned out. I’ve made up points on the riders ahead of me in the championship standings, and now I’m confidently looking forward to the next GP where I hope to get a good result.

The world motocross championship moves on to Faenza, Italia where next Sunday 9th September the GP of Europe will be held.

Overall MX2 Standings after 14 GP: 1. Herlings (KTM) 622, 2. Searle (Kawasaki) 557, 3.Van Horebeek (KTM) 519,  4. Nicholls (KTM) 387; 5.Roelants (Kawasaki) 367, 6.Tixier (KTM) 367, 7 Anstie (Honda)314, 8. Ferrandis (Kawasaki) 272, 9.Butron (KTM) 263, 9, 10. Lupino (Husqvarna) 241.
