Richmond Hill. The MINI brand is once again combining the expansion of its model range with a foray into a new vehicle class. Originally introduced as a concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in 2010, the MINI Paceman is now poised to join the MINI lineup in spring of 2013.  Pricing and additional technical details will be announced closer to the launch date.

The MINI Paceman debuts as the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé in the premium small and compact segment. Its powerful, dynamically stretched coupé lines and hallmark MINI go-kart feeling team up with the exclusive ambience of its variable-usage interior to make the MINI Paceman a pioneer in the urban environment.

Emulating its MINI Countryman stablemate, the MINI Paceman will be offered in three variants with the following basic specifications:

The front-wheel-drive MINI Cooper Paceman will be powered by MINI’s remarkably efficient, naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre four cylinder engine featuring fully variable valve management technology, delivering 121 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 114 ft-lb of torque @ 4,250 rpm.  Equipped with a standard six-speed manual transmission, the new Cooper Paceman will sprint from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds (preliminary) and deliver an average fuel consumption rating of 6.0 L/100km (Euro rating).

The front-wheel-drive MINI Cooper S Paceman will be fitted with MINI’s potent 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and fully variable valve management technology, sporting an output of 181 hp @ 5,500 rpm and maximum torque of 177 ft-lb @ 1,600-5,000 rpm (192 ft-lb with overboost). Capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds (preliminary), the Cooper S Paceman will maintain a particularly thrifty fuel consumption rating of

6.1 L/100 km/h (Euro rating).

The all-wheel-drive MINI Cooper S Paceman ALL4 will be equipped with the same high-performance 181-hp/177 ft-lb powerplant as the FWD Cooper S variant and features MINI’s ALL4 permanent all-wheel-drive system which uses an electromagnetic centre differential to distribute drive seamlessly between the front and rear axles. Performance and fuel economy figures will closely mimic those of the MINI Cooper S Paceman ALL4’s front-wheel-drive sibling.

All Paceman models will be available with either a standard six-speed manual transmission the optional six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic function enabling manual shifting.

Cutting-edge chassis technology ensure go-kart-like agility and safety.

The MINI Paceman’s MacPherson spring strut front axles, forged cross members and multi-link rear axle, combined with ultra-responsive standard Electric Power Steering with standard Servotronic function – underpins its hallmark MINI agility.

Augmented with standard equipment Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) , ABS anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Brake Assist and Hill Assist, the MINI Paceman exhibits exemplary balance and handling prowess.

The MINI Cooper S Paceman and Cooper S Paceman ALL4 models are additionally equipped with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) further enhancing traction and control in adverse driving conditions.

Comprehensive Safety Equipment.

Like the MINI Countryman, which passed the Euro NCAP crash test with the maximum five-star rating, the MINI Paceman’s standard-fitted safety arsenal includes front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for both rows of seats. All seats are fitted with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, while front seat occupants will also find belt tensioners and belt force limiters. Additionally, the rear seats integrate ISOFIX child seat attachments and a run-flat indicator is standard equipment.

Design: powerful stature, sporty and elegant coupé lines.

The innovative concept of a compact Sports Activity Coupé is expressed in a body design that combines dynamically stretched proportions with a muscular stance. With its two doors and large tailgate, plus two full-size individual rear seats, the MINI Paceman has been designed squarely as four-seater, with elegant new proportions enhancing the familiar MINI interior. The slightly raised seating position in the front of the car provides the driver and front passenger with an excellent view over the road, while the rear passengers enjoy generous levels of space, outstanding lateral support and exceptional comfort in a lounge-style configuration. Folding down the rear seats expands the load capacity of the MINI Paceman from 330 to a maximum 1,080 litres.

As first introduced on the MINI Countryman, a two-part Centre Rail storage and attachment system will be standard equipment and extend from just aft of the gearshift on the centre console to rear of  the front seats, with a second section mounted between the rear seats, allowing rear passengers full cabin access. A single-section full-length Centre Rail which extends from the gearshift console to the rear bulkhead will also be available as an option. The Centre Rail is fully illuminated, in conjunction with the rear door panels.

The fresh and individual character of the MINI Paceman comes across most prominently when the car is viewed from the side. The coupé-style roof, swooping downwards towards the rear, sits almost seamlessly atop the passenger compartment. The long doors each have a high character line, which connects the front and rear wheel arches and gives the body a lower-slung appearance. The extremely muscular rear wheel arches underline the MINI Paceman’s sporting credentials.

The most eye-catching new feature of the rear end are the rear lights which, in a first for MINI, display a horizontal design. The MINI Paceman is the first member of the brand’s line-up to be identified by a rear nameplate.

Eight exterior paint shades are available for the MINI Paceman, including the new Brilliant Copper, Blazing Red and – exclusively for the MINI Paceman – Starlight Blue variants. The roof and exterior mirror caps are available in body colour, white or black.

State-of-the-art Infotainment and Navigation Systems

In keeping with the MINI family’s position at the forefront of in-car communication systems, the Paceman will be available with a full spectrum of information and entertainment systems.  The optional Wired Package includes Navigation, Advanced Bluetooth, Voice Recognition, Integrated Visual Display and MINI Connected.

MINI Connected provides safe, comfortable and intuitive access to Facebook, Twitter, Web Radio, News, Google™ Local Search, Google™ Send to Car, Dynamic Music and MINImalism Analyzer with compatible iPhones.

The new MINI Paceman arrives in Canada in spring of 2013. Pricing and additional technical details will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
