Munich. With two guests from Scandinavia, the BMW Welt Jazz Award 2017 kicks off its ninth season. Chris Minh Doky & New Nordic Jazz will showcase at BMW Welt’s double-coned structure on January 22nd, why in Danish jazz contrabassists tend to be the leader, while Swedish Lars Danielsson will share the stage on February 5th for the first time with young musician Grégory Privat from Martinique. Until the mid of March four more cost-free matinees will follow. The BMW Welt Jazz Award jury will pick after the last matinee two ensembles, which will face each other in the finale at the beginning of May, while the audience is free to decide their very own favorite’s prize.

Chris Minh Doky, son of a Danish pop singer and Vietnamese doctor and guitarist, studied piano as a teenager at the Royal Danish Academy for Music before turning to the bass age 15. He went to the US, where he became an integral part of the young New Yorkean Scene of the early 90s. Whether playing alongside the likes of Larry Goldings, Mike Stern or Randy Brecker or together with his brother, pianist Niels Lan Doky as part of Doky Brothers, his renditions always combine East Coast grooves with the lyrical sounds of Scandinavia. With his current trio New Nordic Jazz, Chris Minh Doky once again gives a taste of this special mix, proving this January 22ndat BMW Welt.

Lars Danielsson plays Liberetto feat. Grégory Privat on February 5thwill produce a more melodic, warmer sound than most of his colleagues, since he’s coming from cello. Add to this mix the “Nordic sound” of many Scandinavians with which Danielsson joined in his own way the modern, open style European jazz that incorporates both classical and pop music. With his quartet and its members including David Liebman, Bobo Stenson and Jon Christensen alone he recorded ten albums. Other than developing projects with his singer wife Cæcilie Norby, he favoured working with pianists as of late – he recorded several albums with Polish musician Leszek Mozder and for “Libretto” I and II, he formed an entirely harmonious duo with Armenian musician Tigran Hamasyan. Aficionados hold piano player Grégory Privat in high regard, and it is with him that Danielsson will perform at BMW Welt for the very first time.

About BMW Group’s Cultural Commitment

For almost 50 years now, the BMW Group has initiated and engaged in over 100 cultural cooperations worldwide. The company places the main focus of its long-term commitment on contemporary and modern art, classical music and jazz as well as architecture and design. In 1972, three large-scale paintings were created by the artist Gerhard Richter specifically for the foyer of the BMW Group's Munich headquarters. Since then, artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Daniel Barenboim, Jonas Kaufmann and architect Zaha Hadid have co-operated with BMW. Currently, female artist Cao Fei from China and American John Baldessari are creating the next two vehicles for the BMW Art Car Collection. Besides co-initiatives, such as BMW Tate Live, the BMW Art Journey and the “Opera for All” concerts in Berlin, Munich and London, the company also partners with leading museums and art fairs as well as orchestras and opera houses around the world. The BMW Group takes absolute creative freedom in all its cultural activities – as this initiative is as essential for producing groundbreaking artistic work as it is for major innovations in a successful business.
