Richmond Hill, ON. In the eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan, BMW Group Canada has announced the introduction of two new electrified vehicles, the 2025 BMW i5 xDrive40 and the 2025 BMW 550e xDrive. These new models represent BMW's continued commitment to electric mobility and sustainability, pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology while delivering the ultimate driving experience.
The BMW i5 xDrive40 adds a second and more accessible version of the electric 5 Series to the Canadian product portfolio. An 84.3 kWh (net) high-voltage battery produces an estimated range of up to 428 kilometres. The i5 xDrive40 is equipped with BMW's latest eDrive technology, with two electric motors that produce a combined 389 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque. The i5 xDrive40 also features BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which provides exceptional handling and traction in all weather conditions. The i5 xDrive40 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h. When connected to a DC fast charger, the charging rate of up to 205 kW means the battery can be topped up from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.
Production of the BMW i5 xDrive40 will begin at BMW Group’s Plant Dingolfing in March 2024.
The plug-in hybrid BMW 550e xDrive is characterized by direct power delivery, improved efficiency and a significantly increased electric range thanks to a 19 kWh (net) high-voltage battery. It features the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems, which is combined with an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine from the BMW Group's latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation.
The electric motor, specially developed for the hybrid drive, is also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit is particularly efficient and contributes up to an estimated 194 hp to the maximum system output of the sedan.
In combination with the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid models, the 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine in the new BMW 550e xDrive generates an estimated system output of 483 hp and maximum system torque of 516 lb-ft. The plug-in hybrid system puts its power to the road by means of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with a maximum speed limited to 250 km/h, while a maximum speed of 140 km/h is possible in purely electric operating mode.
Production of the BMW 550e xDrive is set to begin at BMW Group’s Plant Dingolfing in July 2024.
