BMW is the world's first manufacturer to provide run flat tyres as
standards for the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW Z4, and available as
an option for all other model series. Run Flat Tyres are also provided
as standards for MINI. The concept Two advantages of the run flat
technology are rigidity and heat resistance, so that the tyre can carry
weight when it is rotating with total air loss. Thanks to reinforced
sidewalls run flat tyres continue to operate up to specified maximum
distance after a loss of tyre pressure: · The sidewall is
constructed with reinforced rubber, carrying the vehicle's weight at
zero pressure · The bead wire is wider and reinforced, ensuring a
secure fit on the rim even at zero pressure, and a special bead filler
generating very little heat is used Advantages Maximum active safety:
safety is at the top of the motoring agenda. The first safety benefit
is that run flat tyres enable the driver to maintain control and
possibly avoid a potentially fatal situation if a vehicle in motion
suffers a rapid loss of tyre pressure. In addition to this, run flat
tyres enable the driver to leave the potential risk area, continue the
journey, and avoid the dangerous steps of jacking up the vehicle on the
roadside, especially at night. Safety warning system: an on-board tyre
pressure monitoring system is mandatory for all run flat tyres fitments
providing the driver with an immediate warning in case of pressure
loss. In this case safety systems such as ABS, SAC or DSC continue to
be operational. Comfort increase: run flat tyre provides more comfort
and convenience. Within the specified speed and distance limits
(typically 80 km/h up to 250km), the driver can either complete his
journey or travel to the next qualified service station to replace the
damaged tyre. Weight and space benefits: run flat tyres save weight, by
eliminating the need to carry a spare tyre. Of course, the free space
created by eliminating the classic space wheel gives BMW engineers
extra design opportunities and offers the end user more storage space.
Unchanged price: run flat tyres cost at present time only 25% more than
regular wheel. This cost is compensated through savings of spare wheel
and rim.
