Munich. After its successful introductory stage the Sports Activity
Vehicle BMW X3 is in vigorous demand on the European and American
markets. Already in the first phase of its introduction on the market
during the first quarter of 2004 approximately 11,000 BMW X3 vehicles
have been delivered to the customers. The U.S.A. proved to be the best
market with a sales volume of approximately 4,500 in the first quarter
followed by Germany (roughly 2,500) and Italy (roughly 1,000). The
introduction of the vehicle on the British market in May and on the
Japanese market (June) will further speed-up the sales. By order of the
BMW Group the four-wheel drive vehicle - manufactured by Magna Steyr in
Graz/Austria - will be produced in three shifts in order to adequately
cope with the vigorous demand. Thus the manufacturing capacity is
increased by one third, i.e. from 300 to 400 vehicles daily. The BMW
X3 is assembled by BMW's production partner Magna Steyr on an assembly
line especially built for this purpose according to BMW standards. The
BMW Group supplements and widens own capacities by this job order
production, capacities that are established in the BMW Group production
network at 23 locations on four continents.
