This allows selected content to be displayed more prominently and clearly. The various views can be selected intuitively using either the Central Display or the multifunction steering wheel.
Intuitive operation with the new multifunction steering wheel and
shy-tech controls.
The multifunction steering wheel follows the
shy-tech principle: the controls on the left for driver assistance and
parking functions illuminate only when they are available, while the
infotainment controls provide haptic feedback. Clearly separating the
assistance, parking, and infotainment functions makes operation safe
and intuitive, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road.
BMW Operating System X: customizable, context-sensitive, and
always up to date.
BMW Operating System X provides the intelligent
foundation for the display and operating system and was designed
specifically for a software-defined vehicle (SDV). Its architecture is
based on the Android Open-Source Project (AOSP), enabling extensive
updates and upgrades. This helps keep the system current over the long

The assistant can help operate the windows, climate control, seating comfort functions, phone calls, in-car entertainment, and much more. It can also open a wide range of function menus and control selected apps. Integrating Amazon Alexa+ AI technology further expands these capabilities and represents a significant technological advance focused on delivering added value for customers. The system uses a large language model (LLM), a form of generative AI that can “understand” language and formulate its own responses. This enables more conversational interaction, intuitive exchanges, access to external knowledge, cloud-based services and media content, and control of vehicle functions. Linking the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to an Amazon account also makes it easy to search for and stream music, catch up on the latest news, and access a wide range of other content.
If desired, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can offer proactive suggestions based on usage patterns and other factors. BMW Operating System X expands this capability by considering a much broader range of contexts, including the driving situation, surrounding conditions, and interior sensing. The Routines function provides another way for the assistant to support the driver, making it easy to create routines tailored to individual preferences. For example, if the steering wheel heating, seat heating, and defrost function are activated at the start of every winter journey, those actions can be combined into a routine and performed automatically or semi-automatically. Drivers can also create personalized routines based on factors such as the current situation, seat occupancy, time, and temperature.

Navigation with BMW Maps: sophisticated, precise, anticipatory, and
enhanced with a new driver assistance visualization function[2]
.
BMW Digital Premium expands the navigation features
available in BMW Maps. Real-time traffic information, satellite views,
3D building models, and proactive tips support precise, anticipatory
route planning, while parking information is presented in greater
detail. For the first time, BMW Maps search results and points of
interest are supplemented by Google Search. Integrating Google into
the BMW navigation system improves the quality, completeness, and
timeliness of search results and points of interest, giving customers
more intelligent searches, more results, and additional information
such as reviews and images. If the vehicle’s current range is
insufficient for the journey, the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation
system also calculates a charging-optimized route after the
destination is entered (see chapter on Charging).
BMW Maps with driver assistance[3]: On models equipped with the optional Highway Assistant or Highway and Commuting Assistant, the driver’s vehicle and surrounding objects detected by the sensor system are shown directly on the 3D navigation map in the full-screen BMW Maps view on the Central Display. High-precision mapping data allows the navigation view to position the vehicle accurately within the available lanes. For the first time, relevant navigation and
driver assistance graphics—including the vehicle and its surroundings—are combined in a single view. The navigation system provides route guidance, driver assistance supports the driving task, and the integrated 3D view clearly shows how the two work together. Drivers can compare the actual driving situation at a glance with the vehicle’s interpretation of its surroundings. This builds confidence in the advanced Level 2 driver assistance functions and makes the navigation display easier to follow.
BMW Maps with driver assistance has been developed in-house by BMW and uses navigation data and mapping technology from its partner Mapbox. Its combination of navigation, 3D map display and driver assistance therefore allows BMW Maps to offer a point of differentiation in international markets when it comes to intelligent vehicle guidance.
Drive system and battery. Technological leap forward with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Extremely powerful M Performance model with M eDrive tops the range.
Exceptional dynamism and efficiency: BMW iX4 M60 xDrive.
The new BMW iX4 will launch as the iX4 50 xDrive. The range-topping BMW iX4 M60 xDrive will be available to order a short time later, adding further breadth to the performance spectrum.
The all-electric BMW iX4 M60 xDrive is engineered to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Its Gen6 M eDrive technology draws maximum performance from every journey, with two electric motors providing power and precision. This highly efficient drive technology helps reduce energy consumption while combining sporting capability with everyday practicality.
The exceptionally dynamic BMW iX4 M60 xDrive is equipped with an electric motor at both the front and the rear axle together with an all-wheel-drive system in an M-specific application. The motors generate a combined maximum output of 603 hpand peak torque of 645 lb-ft. The SUV coupe sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 3.9 seconds on its way to an electronically governed top speed of 149 mph.
BMW iX4 50 xDrive: sporty SUV coupe with outstanding charging rate
and an estimated maximum range of 428 miles.
The BMW iX4 50 xDrive
is also powered by one electric motor at the front axle and another at
the rear. Together, the two motors deliver a maximum output of 463 hp
and peak torque of 475 lb-ft. The BMW iX4 50 xDrive accelerates to
60 mph from rest in 4.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 130 mph.
Its high-voltage battery has a usable energy content of 112.2 kWh and
offers a maximum charging rate of 400 kW.
The new BMW iX4 50 xDrive boasts an estimated range of up to 428 miles[4]. When plugged in to an 800V high-power charging station, it can be replenished with enough energy to increase the range by up to 184 milesin ten minutes. Charging from 10 to 80% takes 21 minutes at this type of charging station. The new BMW iX4 50 xDrive can be charged with AC power at up to 15.4 kW as standard.
In the spotlight: new-generation battery with newly developed lithium-ion cylindrical cells for higher energy density.
The all-new, latest-generation battery serves as the energy hub of the new BMW iX4. Taking center stage here are the lithium-ion cylindrical cells fitted in the high-voltage battery pack. Measuring 46 millimeters in diameter and 95 millimeters in height, these newly developed cylindrical cells achieve a 20% increase in volumetric energy density compared with the Gen5 tech’s prismatic cells.
Cell-to-pack design for high energy density at pack level.
The cylindrical cells of the new BMW iX4 – with their higher energy density – are also integrated directly into the high-voltage battery without any modular arrangement or structural elements. This cell-to-pack design enables high energy densities at pack level and saves weight and costs.
Pack-to-open-body construction: high-voltage battery acting as structural component saves weight and increases torsional rigidity.
Thanks to the pack-to-open-body construction, the high-voltage battery in the BMW iX4 also acts as a structural component. The chassis has an open floor, which is closed when the high-voltage battery is installed. The housing cover therefore assumes the function of the car underbody. Dispensing with the customary underbody in this way saves weight. The pack-to-open-body design has the additional advantage of improving the body’s torsional rigidity, which has a positive effect on the sporty handling abilities of the new BMW iX4.
Highly intelligent control center: the Energy Master.
All the electrics and electronics for the high-voltage battery are housed in the Energy Master. The Gen6 version is positioned on top of the high-voltage battery. The Energy Master, software and hardware for which were both developed in-house by the BMW Group, supplies power to the electric motors and the vehicle’s electrical system. It is also the interface for all data from the high-voltage battery and ensures intelligent, efficient and safe battery operation.
New BMW iX4 powered by a pair of highly efficient electric motors with EESM and ASM technology.
All BMW iX4 models are equipped with an electric motor at both the front and rear axle. An electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) designed for the 800V architecture is built into the rear axle, which is the primary drive axle. This EESM unit forms the centerpiece of the Gen6 drive technology for the Neue Klasse. In the BMW iX4 50 xDrive, it has an output of 322 hp, with maximum torque of 321 lb-ft.
The electrically excited synchronous motor uses a stator supplied with three-phase AC power to generate a rotating magnetic field and a rotor equipped with electrically excited electromagnets. This design differs fundamentally from that of permanent-magnet motors because the rotor’s magnetic field can be adjusted as needed. At low loads, the magnetic field can be reduced to minimize losses; at high loads, a much stronger field can be generated to deliver high torque and maintain power output up to the motor’s maximum speed. An inverter controls the entire system, converting DC current from the battery into the required AC current while managing rotor excitation and all control and monitoring processes. This allows the EESM to operate at optimal efficiency at all times. The technology gives the motor a clear competitive distinction, particularly in efficiency and power delivery.
The new range-topping model, the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive, uses a new Gen6 EESM variant at the rear axle. It enables higher peak and continuous output as well as higher peak and continuous torque. It is based on a newly developed stator to boost output and a significantly more powerful inverter with 420 A instead of 300 A. Added to this is a longer ratio in conjunction with an increase in the maximum usable rotor speed, which pushes the car’s top speed up to 149 mph.
In every BMW iX4 model, the EESM is paired with an asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front axle that produces 165 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. The ASM operates on the principle of induction and complements the EESM as a compact, lightweight unit, although its rotor design is significantly different. Rather than using magnets or electrical excitation, the rotor consists of aluminum rods connected by short-circuit rings. Torque is generated by induced currents created by a difference in rotational speed—known as slip—between the stator field and the rotor. The ASM is highly robust, heat resistant, compact, and resource-efficient because it uses only iron and aluminum. Combining the two motor types provides a clear technological advantage: compared with the already capable previous generation, they reduce energy losses by 40%, drive-system weight by 10%, and manufacturing costs by 20%.
Bidirectional charging: an innovation that turns the BMW iX4 into a
mobile powerbank during a journey and a flexible energy storage device
at home.
The new BMW iX4 – like all future Gen6 electric
vehicles – will come with the added innovation of bidirectional
charging functions. This means that the energy stored in the battery
can be used not just for the drive system and the electrical consumers
in the vehicle, but for the following applications too:
Innovative charging products – for at home or on the go.
Innovative equipment optimizes the charging experience, both at home and during a journey. The products from BMW make charging flexible, while new products for bidirectional charging further enhance the vehicle’s range. The charging cable or Multifunction Charger fits into the storage compartment under the hood.
BMW Multifunction Charger (MFC): The compact, versatile BMW Multifunction Charger provides convenient home charging from standard 120V and 240V outlets. It includes a NEMA 5-15 plug for 120V outlets and a NEMA 14-50 adapter for 240V outlets. Additional lower-power adapters are available separately, providing flexibility across charging locations.
The MFC also supports bidirectional charging through optional Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home adapters.
BMW Wallbox Plus: The BMW Wallbox Plus provides fast, convenient home charging. Its adjustable output of up to 64 amps (15.4 kW) delivers high-performance Level 2 charging tailored to the customer’s electrical setup. It supports the NACS connector and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID and vehicle MAC-address connectivity for streamlined setup, monitoring and secure access control.
Easy, convenient, digital: turning charging into a user-friendly experience
The BMW iX4 introduces numerous innovations that make charging on the
road faster and more convenient. These include charging-optimized
route planning based on individual preferences, automatic battery
preparation for faster DC charging, an intelligent charging flap that
opens and closes automatically, and Plug & Charge for seamless
authentication at compatible charging stations.
Charging-optimized route planning: If a destination
is beyond the vehicle’s current range, BMW Maps calculates a
charging-optimized route with appropriate charging stops. Drivers can
set preferred minimum charge levels for arrival at charging points and
the final destination, as well as preferred charging-station
operators. With the help of AI, the system uses previous charging
sessions to estimate factors such as realistic charging power,
reliability, and the precise location of individual charging stations,
then incorporates the optimal stop into the route. For transparency,
it also provides information about current occupancy, the number of
charging points, and connector types. Estimated charging duration and
cost are shown in advance based on the driver’s stored charging
tariffs. During the journey, the vehicle and My BMW App synchronize
current information so passengers can review and adjust the route if
necessary. Nearby amenities—including restaurants, play areas,
restrooms, and shopping—are also displayed.
Battery preparation for faster DC charging: Battery
preparation gets the high-voltage battery to the ideal temperature
prior to charging at a DC charging station, thereby increasing the
charging rate when the car is first plugged in and shortening charging
time. When navigating to a DC charging station using BMW Maps, the BMW
iX4 automatically warms or cools the battery to the temperature
required in advance. Alternatively, customers can activate this
function manually via the Central Display or My BMW App. The battery’s
current temperature status and the time remaining for battery
preparation can be checked at any time on the Vehicle Status screen in
the BMW iX4 or via the My BMW App.
Intelligent charging flap: The charging port is
located on the right side of the new BMW iX4 at the rear. Although the
charging flap can still be opened manually with a simple push, there
is no longer any need to. That’s because the intelligent charging flap
on the new BMW iX4 opens by itself as soon as it detects that the
customer intends to charge the car. One of the triggers for opening
the flap is AI-assisted: if the customer heads for a known or learned
charging point, the path they take will indicate their intention to
charge the car, prompting the flap to open. If a charging cable
ultimately isn’t connected, the charging flap will automatically close
again – just as it does at the end of charging or when the vehicle is
switched to drive-ready state.
Plug & Charge Multi Contract: The new BMW iX4 is also compatible with the Plug & Charge Multi Contract feature, making charging on the go particularly easy. With this service, digital authentication via app or charging card is no longer required to access compatible public charging stations. Instead, the vehicle authenticates itself through a technical interface (ISO15118-2). Up to ten individual Plug & Charge-enabled charging contracts from different providers can be displayed digitally in the vehicle. When the vehicle is connected to the charging point, it is not just electricity that passes through the charging cable: the necessary contract data is also transmitted via the communication interface.
Driving experience. Redefining Sheer Driving Pleasure. Heart of Joy introduces a leap forward in technology.
For a new dimension in driving pleasure: the Heart of Joy acts ten times faster than previous systems.
The Heart of Joy is one of the four superbrains in the BMW iX4 and controls the drive system, braking, charging, recuperation and steering subfunctions. It combines with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control Driving Stack developed in-house to form the high-performance powertrain and driving dynamics control system in the BMW iX4. BMW has amassed decades of experience in the field of innovative control systems – a tradition that dates back to 1979 and the introduction of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the BMW 7 Series.
The Heart of Joy achieves new levels of performance as it computes all the driving dynamics functions. It acts ten times faster than previous systems – a technological leap forward that translates into exceptionally precise, composed and effortless handling. The Heart of Joy therefore promises a whole new dimension in Sheer Driving Pleasure.
More consistent cornering behavior as a result of far fewer control inputs.
The Heart of Joy reduces the number of control inputs required in the new BMW iX4 – such as corrective hydraulic braking inputs by the DSC system. The resulting cornering behavior is more consistent and reproducible, which helps to further increase the sense of safety. As a result, the BMW iX4 can be steered through corners very intuitively and with supreme precision too. Significantly reducing the number of control inputs needed has the additional benefit of improving acoustic comfort and minimizing vibrations.
Recuperative braking replaces traditional friction brakes in everyday driving.
The new BMW iX4 decelerates virtually entirely by means of recuperative braking in day-to-day driving. Indeed, the driver can bring the vehicle to a stop without applying the friction brakes in most situations in everyday use. The conventional brakes are only used for sporty driving or when emergency braking is required.
When slowing to a halt, precise control of the electric motors allows the new BMW iX4 to draw to a stop without any jerking or braking noise. This Soft Stop feature results in the smoothest stopping action in the history of BMW.
The cornerstones of sporting prowess: low center of gravity and almost perfect weight distribution.
As a Neue Klasse model, the BMW iX4 boasts all the advantages of a vehicle architecture that has been developed specifically for electric mobility. The new, flat high-voltage battery enables a particularly low center of gravity, for instance. Together with the almost perfect weight distribution, this provides an outstanding basis for precise and agile handling. The long wheelbase of the BMW iX4 is also key to its outstanding directional stability and very stable handling. All model variants come equipped with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
Double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle.
The chassis of the new BMW iX4 combines excellent dynamic performance capabilities with impressive ride comfort over long journeys. An updated version of the proven double-joint spring strut front axle with torque arm and anti-roll bar is fitted as standard. The steering gear is positioned in front of the axle.
The front axle kinematics benefit from increased positive caster trail – developed specifically for this model – and stiffer rubber mounts. This improves steering feel at the same time as ensuring more precise response. The new five-link rear axle features separately arranged springs and dampers.
The BMW iX4 comes with stiffer control arm bearings on both axles for even more dynamic handling, as well as anti-roll bars including mounts with high preload at the front and rear. Standard specification also includes lift-related dampers that are tuned to the car’s sporty nature.
Adaptive M suspension for even sportier handling without loss of comfort.
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive spearheads the new, all-electric SUV coupe line-up with its dynamic performance capabilities. It comes as standard with Adaptive M Suspension, further enhancing both sporting prowess and ride comfort. This suspension is available as an option on iX4 50 xDrive.
Adaptive M Suspension features electronically controlled dampers, which can be adjusted individually and independently of one another. The driver selects the basic setting via My Modes, with the choice ranging from comfortable to very sporty.
The optimum damping forces for the driving situation at hand are calculated in the space of a few milliseconds, with the individual dampers smoothly carrying out any adjustments during a journey. In this way, Adaptive M Suspension improves the iX4’s dynamic steering behavior. This results in remarkably sharp, direct and fleet-footed handling, while drivers will notice even better steering feel. Adaptive M Suspension additionally enables very supple damper response, thereby ensuring superior ride comfort and lower noise levels.
Adaptive M Suspension also includes sport steering with a variable ratio rack. This produces the signature steering feel of a BMW while reducing steering effort when performing parking maneuvers, for example, or making turns in urban areas. Sport steering also stands out with its excellent directional stability.
The development team has carried out extensive modifications to the chassis of the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive in order to endow it with the exceptionally dynamic handling abilities characteristic of BMW M models. Besides bespoke tuning of the springs and dampers, other measures include fitting anti-roll bar links at the front axle. These make the anti-roll bar even more effective, improving steering precision and reducing body roll.
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive instantly translates the power from the all-electric BMW M eDrive powertrain into pure dynamism. The Heart of Joy and BMW M Dynamic Performance Control coordinate driving-related information in milliseconds, ensuring a very direct and precise driving experience. The driver can use the shift paddles on the steering wheel to actively influence the responses of M eDrive and to adapt performance with exceptional precision according to the driving situation at hand. Customized, speed-sensitive sound design and dynamic handling feedback promise an exhilarating driving experience typical of M models.
Exclusive to the M Performance model: electronically controlled M Sport differential for even better traction.
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive is equipped with an electronically controlled M Sport differential at the rear axle. This improves traction when cornering or driving on roads with slippery surfaces, thereby further increasing the car’s lateral acceleration and dynamic handling capabilities.
For added thrills at the wheel of the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive: the My Modes “M Sport” and “M Sport Plus”.
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive comes with two exclusive My Modes – M Sport and M Sport Plus – that open the door to an even more thrilling, individual and sporty driving experience. The settings for the drive system, steering and chassis are adapted to match the respective My Mode.
Alloy wheels measuring 20, 21 and 22 inches in size.
All BMW iX4 models are equipped as standard with the M Sport package, which includes 20-inch M alloy wheels. Further alloy wheel designs are available as options, ranging in size from 20 to 22 inches.
The BMW iX4 M60 xDrive rides on 21-inch light-alloy wheels as standard, with the option of specially developed 21-inch sport tires. 22-inch M aerodynamic wheels (style 1052 M) are available exclusively for the range-topping model.
Driver assistance systems. BMW Symbiotic Drive for a new dimension in assisted driving pleasure.
Innovative SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems and active safety
functions that genuinely reduce strain on the driver and increase road
safety.
The new BMW iX4 features innovative SAE Level 2 driver
assistance systems and active safety functions with BMW Symbiotic
Drive. These include a series of major improvements and functional
enhancements over the previous models, culminating in an assured
driver assistance experience extending uninterrupted from Highways to
country roads and city streets.
BMW Symbiotic Drive enables fluid, intuitive interaction between
driver assistance and human input in every driving
situation.
BMW’s advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems are
engineered for seamless cooperation between automated assistance and
the driver. The result is a confident, controllable experience
designed to deliver maximum customer benefit. When assistance is
active, the driver can accelerate, steer, or brake as needed without
immediately deactivating the system. This allows the driver and
assistance technology to work together naturally in any driving
situation. This level of cooperative interaction is currently
unmatched in the segment. Clear controls and displays in BMW Panoramic
iDrive further support intuitive operation and help ensure that SAE
Level 2 partially automated driving functions remain controllable at
all times.
The symbiotic interaction between driver and vehicle can also be experienced with active safety functions, such as the Lane Keeping Assistant. The driver’s intention is determined based on steering behavior and where they are looking, meaning that the system assists with warnings and steering inputs only when the driver is unintentionally drifting out of their lane or the system detects an impending collision.
Hands-free driving with the BMW Highway Assistant.
The Highway
Assistant enables attentive hands-free driving on the highway up to
85 mph. Customers in Germany, Canada and the USA have already clocked
up over 143 million miles with their hands off the wheel using the
previous generation of Highway Assistant technology.
Driving Assistant Plus with BMW Symbiotic Drive.
Driving
Assistant Plus—which bundles Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go,
Speed Limit Assistant, Lane Keep Assistant, and Steering Assistant—can
control the speed of the BMW 3 Series and its distance from the
vehicle in front at the driver’s request and help them to easily keep
the car in its lane. BMW Symbiotic Drive enables Driving Assistant
Plus to also work smoothly and intuitively in tandem with the driver’s
inputs, if desired.
Even more extensive range of active safety assistance functions than
in earlier models in this vehicle class.
Thanks to BMW Symbiotic
Drive, the active safety functions fitted as standard in the BMW iX4
work intelligently and unobtrusively in the background as silent
companions. The vehicle can recognize what the driver intends to do
based on steering behavior and where they are looking. As a result,
the Lane Keeping Assistant, for instance, will only trigger warnings
and control the steering if it detects the vehicle veering out of lane
unintentionally or an impending collision. The system will therefore
not intervene in deliberate maneuvers, provided there is no
foreseeable risk of a collision or the vehicle leaving the road.
Deliberate maneuvers are flagged up by use of the turn signal
indicators, for example, as well as active steering movements or the
driver glancing over their shoulder.
New functions include enhanced emergency steering intervention, which can automatically steer around objects detected in the vehicle’s lane. Numerous other features are standard, including Lane Change Warning, Side Collision Warning with steering intervention, and Crossing Traffic Warning with emergency braking when turning onto a road or exiting a parking space. The Emergency Brake Assistant with Evasion Assistant can help avoid frontal collisions and apply maximum braking force when necessary. New sensor technology also enables the system to respond more effectively to wildlife crossing the road. In addition, the standard exit warning function can actively delay a door from opening when a cyclist is approaching, helping prevent dangerous “dooring” accidents.
Parking has never been so easy – with activation of the new
Park Assist directly from the steering wheel, AI-supported parking
space detection and maneuver planning.
The new Park Assist is capable of semi-automated parking,
while the new visualization function for the area around the car makes
selection of detected parking spaces even more intuitive. Automated
parking maneuvers are carried out even more swiftly and smoothly. The
optional Parking Assistant Plus provides a 360° view with the option
of switching between curb, 3D and car wash views. There is also a
Maneuver Assistant that is able to record and then perform recurring
maneuvers covering a distance of up to 650 feet. The Parking Assistant
Professional offers the complete package, additionally providing
extensive options for carrying out parking and stored maneuvers
remotely from up to 20 feet away using the My BMW smartphone app. All
driver and parking assistance functions can also be activated
digitally from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store at a later stage.
Intelligent interplay between Heart of Joy and Superbrain of
Automated Driving.
The close interplay between the Heart of Joy and Superbrain of
Automated Driving in the new BMW iX4 enriches the assisted driving
experience with the smoothest stopping ability in the history of BMW –
thanks to jerk-free, noiseless recuperative braking all the way to a
standstill. All assisted braking maneuvers are carried out purely by
means of electric motor recuperation until the car comes to a halt,
with the exception of emergency braking.
