Whitby . BMW Canada today announced pricing and product updates for the 2010 model year BMW lineup.

The transition to model year 2010 is highlighted by the introduction of 8 new BMW models, led by the dynamic BMW X5M and X6M high-performance SAVs, the breathtaking BMW 760Li joining the new-generation 7 Series range, along with xDrive variants of the newly-launched BMW 750i and 750Li and the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo carving out yet another new niche in the premium segment.

Initiating a new element of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics strategy, two BMW Active Hybrid models are also poised to make their debut, with the ActiveHybrid X6  joining the lineup in December 2009, followed in spring of 2010 by the ActiveHybrid 7.

In consideration of the enactment of Ontario’s Distracted Driver Legislation - Bill 118 -  prohibiting the use of handheld devices while driving (already enacted in Quebec, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, effective January 1 in B.C. and pending in Alberta), the majority of 2010 BMW models are equipped with hands-free ready Bluetooth technology and USB audio integration as standard equipment, and available as a option where not fitted as standard. Further enhancing driver safety and convenience on these models is standard BMW Assist, including a 1-year subscription.

The following summarizes updates to the 2010 BMW model lineup, starting with the latest new model introductions.

BMW X5M and X6M

Powered by a newly-developed 4.4-litre V8 M Twin Power Turbo engine delivering 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,650 rpm, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M set new standards of acceleration, lateral grip, steering response, balance, and stopping power among high-performance sports activity vehicles. Both models accelerate from zero to 100 km/h  in 4.7 seconds and feature impressive delivery of power from the V8 Twin Power Turbo engine.

The 2010 BMW X5M SAV debuts with an MSRP of $97,900, while the BMW X6M Sport Activity Coupé has an MSRP of $99,900.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

Unveiled in February as a concept vehicle, the 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the looks and attributes of a sporty BMW Sedan, a modern Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic luxury GranTurismo.

Debuting as a 550i, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is powered by BMW’s 4.4-liter, 400-hp twin turbocharged V-8 engine. Compared to BMW’s normally aspirated V-8, displacement is reduced from 4.8 to 4.4 liters, and incorporates twin turbochargers and High Precision direct injection, delivering 400 hp over a range from 5500 to 6400 rpm. Maximum torque is a massive 450 lb-ft., also available over an extremely broad range of 1800 to 4500 rpm.

Mated to an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is capable of sprinting from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, while maintaining a combined fuel efficiency rating of 11.8 L/100 km (preliminary).

A truly unique feature of the 5 Series Gran Turismo is the two-piece “bi-modal” trunk system, consisting of a smaller, trunklid-like opening under the rear window and a large, electrically operated liftgate similar to that of BMW’s X models. The “trunklid” can be opened separately; when the liftgate is opened it includes the lower lid.

A  partial list of the extensive performance and luxury-oriented standard equipment includes:

  • Dynamic Drive Control with 3 modes
  • Self-Levelling Rear Suspension
  • Dakota Leather Uphostery.
  • Panorama Glass roof, electric with electric sunshade.
  • Heated, Multifunction leather steering wheel.
  • Unique 40:20:40 split folding rear seat.
  • Four-zone automatic air conditioning with solar and fogging sensor.
  • Premium HiFi Sound System with 600-watt multi-channel amplifier, MP3 capable DVD drive, 7-band equalizer with Dirac Live™ and 12GB of hard-disc media storage.

Pricing for the new 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo will be announced in December of 2009.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

The world’s first Sports Activity Coupé with full hybrid drive will offer a significant increase in driving dynamics while reducing fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent versus a comparable vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is comprised  of a 400 hp twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine with high precision direct injection and two electric synchronous motors delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively. Maximum system output is 480 hp, and peak torque reaches 575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the power units optimizes the overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds, with acceleration from 0- 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds (European figure).  Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is improved by roughly 20%, producing a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometer.

BMW’s first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power  – ie: entirely free of CO2 emissions – up to a speed of 60 km/h, with  the combustion engine being activated automatically whenever required.

Specifications and pricing for the ActiveHybrid X6 will be closer to the Canadian market launch in December 2009.

BMW  750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive

Expanding the new-generation 7 Series lineup launched in spring of 2009, the 2010 BMW 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive embrace the latest generation of BMW’s sophisticated xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology that distributes driving torque between the front and rear axles, optimizing traction, handling and vehicle dynamics in all driving conditions.

With engine and transmission specifications identical to the 750i and 750Li models, the 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive debut with, respectively, MSRP’s of $108,600 and $116,600.

  BMW 760Li

The heart of the new BMW 760Li is a completely new 6.0 litre all-aluminum twelve-cylinder power unit with High Precision direct fuel injection and Twin Power Turbo technology.  Developed as a completely new engine “from the ground up”, the V12, also equipped with double-VANOS infinitely adjustable camshaft timing, is a masterpiece of modern engine technology, delivering 535hp @ 5,250 – 6,000 rpm and a staggering 550 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,000 rpm.

This exhilarating new engine will also be mated to the newly-developed eight-speed automatic transmission - combination whisking the BMW 760Li from 0 – 100 km/hr in just 4.7 seconds.

Standard equipment on the new BMW 760 Li also includes:

 ·         Dynamic Damping Control including Dynamic Driving Control

 ·         Speed-sensitive Servotronic steering assistance

 ·          Dynamic Drive anti-roll stability system.

 ·         Self-levelling air suspension on the rear axle with  Integral Active Steering offered as an option.

 ·         Head-up display.

 ·         Rear and side view cameras.

 ·         Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

 ·         Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go.

 ·         12-way electrically-adjustable comfort rear seats with ventilation and    massaging.

 ·         Rear Seat Entertainment system with dual 9.2” screens.

Pricing for the new BMW 760Li will be announced late November 2009.

  BMW ActiveHybrid 7

Based on the newest BMW 7 Series Sedan and introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 sets new standards for performance and efficiency in the premium luxury class.

This symbiosis of an upgraded Twin Power Turbo, High Precision Direct Injection, V8 engine with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor gives the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 a total system output of 465 hp and maximum torque of 515 lb-ft (preliminary figures). Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and the torque converter. The electric motor receives its supply of energy from a specially-developed lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the integrated electric motor acts as a generator when coasting or applying the brakes, in order to feed electric power into the battery.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7 accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds (preliminary figure), while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the 750i.  Specifications and pricing for the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, BMW’s first luxury sedan with ActiveHybrid technology, will be announced closer to the Canadian market launch in spring of 2010.

The unprecedented complement of six 7 Series models will make for the most prominent

7 Series family in the history of BMW Canada.
