Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey...BMW's image-shattering R 1200 C forms the basis
for a pair of new cruisers for MY 2001, bringing the range of low-slung
torquers to a total of four. In addition to the original C model and the
graphitan-accented Euro, the Montana joins the ranks bringing coast-to-coast
aspirations, while the Phoenix hits the urban streets as a chrome-and-polish
companion to the Euro. At the other extreme, BMW's R 1100 S sheds a few pounds
via the time-tested carbon-fiber diet to become the R 1100 SL, strikingly
dressed in slinky, black-on-black attire. These three join a stable of
trademark Boxer-twins that includes last-year's all-new R 1150 GS, as well as
the full-dress R 1100 RT, original sport-touring
R 1100 RS and a special-edition R 1100 R.

These new variations represent the latest developments in BMW's history-making
twins. When BMW set about redesigning its trademark Boxers, it retained the
original horizontally-opposed engine principle and shaft-drive-period.
Everything else, from brakes and fuel delivery to suspension and ergonomics
came in for a complete revision. The result was the R259 Boxers, quite simply
the most technologically advanced twin-cylinder motorcycles in production today.

These motorcycles bristle with the kind of leading-edge technology you'd expect
the company to bring to a clean-sheet design, beginning with the engine. The
R259 Boxers feature an innovative high-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder layout,
providing an exceptionally broad torque curve, while at the same time
delivering superlative peak power. Bosch Motronic engine management controls
both the fuel-injection and ignition systems, which combine with a three-way
catalytic converter to ensure that the R259 engine is one of the cleanest, most
responsive ever built.

Wrapped around this exceptional powerplant is a chassis that easily matches its
sophistication. Beginning with the frame, BMW engineers discarded the
traditional tubular steel affair and replaced it with an aluminum subframe that
uses the engine as a stressed member for outstanding strength. They then
rejected the telescopic fork, with its numerous compromises, and developed the
Telelever, an alternative that is not only much stronger, but more responsive
and less maintenance intensive as well. Whether paired with BMW's renowned
Paralever rear suspension on the 1100 and 1150 flat-twins or to the updated
Monolever on the R 1200 C, the Telelever ensures that the new-generation Boxers
can accommodate the varied needs of the most demanding riders.

The brakes also reflect the thinking that went into the latest generation Boxer
twins. Each one, ranging all the way from the sporting R 1100 S to the R 1200 C
cruiser, boasts triple disc brakes, with four-piston Brembo calipers at the
front and a twin-piston Brembo caliper at the rear. To control this top-drawer
hardware BMW developed ABS II, a lightweight, responsive antilock braking
system, then made it available on every Boxer.

Not content with designing the most sophisticated engine and chassis in their
history, BMW's engineers finished these twins with a flourish, adding such
items (differing by model) as adjustable ergonomics, three-position seat
heights, radial tires, extensive tire-repair and toolkits, superb aerodynamics
and a range of variations and options to suit everyone from boulevard prowlers
to long-distance tourers. As a final point, all plastic on the new Boxers is
recyclable, and manufactured using no ozone-depleting CFCs.
